Position Summary

The Educational Opportunity & Pathway Programs (EOPP) Advisor provides comprehensive and holistic advising to a
caseload of EOPP participants. The role functions under general supervision, reporting to the Director of the
Educational Opportunity & Pathway Programs (EOPP) and works closely with the EOPP Advising Coordinator and other
EOPP programs. The Division of Student Affairs & Enrollment Management (SAEM) and EOPP strive to enhance the
undergraduate educational experience and to support program participants’ progress towards graduation through
outreach, recruitment, advising, tutoring, mentoring, and other high-impact practices.
The incumbent provides comprehensive advising to assist EOPP participants to achieve their academic, personal, and
career goals; assists students in exploring and declaring a major, identifying strengths and interests, and setting
goals to facilitate student success, persistence, and degree completion in a timely manner; and helps students
understand SF State’s general education requirements, graduation requirements, and college-based university-wide
policies and procedures.
The incumbent provides advising and supportive services to participants individually and in group settings. Case
management responsibilities include continuous tracking of participant progress towards completing general
education requirements; identifying and recommending developmental strategies, and identifying and recommending
other university resources to ensure student success, retention, and increased graduation. The incumbent also
collaborates on new student orientations/ EOPP Welcome Sessions, participates in student retention initiatives,
participates in all trainings/professional development opportunities, assists with program outreach and recruitment,
and offers academic success workshops

Position Information

Academic Advising
Independently coordinate and deliver academic advising to an assigned group of students each year; develop
an action plan for success based on the unique needs of each student; monitor and assess student progress in
achieving their path to success and make adjustments to their path based on the progress and changing needs
of the student; identify current and potential challenges (e.g. adjustment to college, time-management) and
counsel students through complex academic/personal challenges; make appropriate referrals to campus
resources.
Provide academic advising to participants on general education, graduation requirements, college-based
policies, and other related policies and procedures through individual appointments, walk-in advising, and
group workshops.
Consult with students experiencing academic difficulty, and assist them in identifying reasons for their academic
difficulty and direct them to learning support services.
Advise students on academic probation, subject to disqualification, and who have been disqualified, providing
follow-up guidance and support.
Offer workshops on topics related to the retention of students (e.g., study skills, time management, choosing a
major, probations, financial aid/literacy, etc.).
Program Outreach and Recruitment
Participate in program outreach and recruitment efforts via presentations, college fairs, tabling, Explore SF
State, New Student Orientation, Welcome Sessions, etc.
Training and Professional Development
Participate in and attend all scheduled University Advising Council (UAC) trainings and various other
professional development opportunities offered through the UAC, other on-campus departments/programs,
and outside agencies.
Comprehend and remain current on all: Title V, California State University, and SF State policies and
procedures; SF State general education requirements for continuing students; and any new
requirements/policies that get implemented.
Public Relations/Collaborations
Develop and maintain rapport with various on and off-campus programs that also work with the first generation
and low-income student populations (UAC, Metro, Guardian Scholars Program, Student Support Services,
10,000 Degrees, College Track, KIPP Schools, and various College Success Centers, etc.).

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge and Abilities: Working knowledge of the practices, procedures, and activities of the program to which
assigned; general knowledge of the methods and problems of organizational and program management. General
knowledge of research and interview techniques; and of the principles of individual and group behavior. Ability to
interpret and apply program rules and regulations; use initiative and resourcefulness in planning work assignments
and in implementing long-range program improvements; obtain factual and interpretative information through
interviews; reason logically; collect, compile, analyze and evaluate data and make verbal or written presentations
based on these data; advise students individually and in groups on routine matters where required; recognize
multicultural, multi-sexed and multi-aged value systems and work accordingly; establish and maintain cooperative
working relationships with faculty, CSU administrators, student organizations, private and public agencies, and others
in committee work, and student advising and community contacts; and, rapidly acquire a general knowledge of the
overall operation, functions and programs of the campus to which assigned. Demonstrated ability to make decisions
and carry through actions having implications for other programs or service areas.
Experience: Possession of these knowledges and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of two years
of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field; experience should give
evidence of competence and indicate the potential for further growth. A master’s degree in a job-related field may be
substituted for one year of professional experience.
Education: Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or
business administration, or a job-related field. Additional specialized experience during which the applicant has
acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown above may be substituted for the required
education on a year-for-year basis.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree from an accredited university in counseling, higher education, student affairs, ethnic studies, college student development, or a closely related discipline.
  • Four years of progressively responsible full-time work experience in program development, academic advising, diversity, equity, and inclusion, or student affairs. The incumbent’s experience should give evidence of competence and indicate the potential for further growth.
  • Knowledge of student development and/or counseling theory and its application to academic counseling and student support services.
  • Knowledge of obstacles students face in college, particularly those faced by first generation and low-income students.
  • Experience working in a program or capacity that specifically supports historically underserved students.
  • Experience in creating and leading workshops/trainings and communicating complex information to students, faculty, and staff.
  • Experience in planning, coordinating, and executing projects, working with multiple stakeholders.
  • Experience supporting underrepresented, low-income, and first-generation college students and coordinating programs to support the needs of this population.
  • Demonstrated experience working effectively with people from diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to use conflict resolution skills and professional communication when resolving complex issues and de-escalating challenging interactions with students and campus partners.
  • Knowledge of the California State University (CSU) System, San Francisco State University, and California postsecondary
  • education.
  • Experience using PeopleSoft, EAB, Microsoft Office Suite, and advising-related software and technology and federal grant reporting and grant submission websites and software.
