PRIMARY PURPOSE:

The Kankakee Flooring Plant team has a job opportunity for an Environmental, Health and Safety Specialist located in Kankakee, IL. The Environmental, Health and Safety Specialist Ensures environmental compliance at the plant by developing and executing an environmental calendar. This position reports to the EHS Manager.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Qualified individuals must have the ability (with or without reasonable accommodation) to perform the following duties:

  • Lead the coordination efforts with outside environmental consultants as necessary to ensure timely report submission and environmental compliance.
  • Conduct environmental audits and assessments.
  • Develop and deliver applicable environmental training.
  • Regular management of Hazardous Waste containment and removal.
  • Understand and interpret existing and future regulatory and sustainability requirements.
  • An effective plant environmental process capable of zero notices of violation for regulatory noncompliance and zero citations for safety and health regulatory noncompliance.
  • Provide guidance to the plant regarding all aspects of environmental health and safety including:
  • Compliance with the various OSHA, EPA, ILEPA and other regulations that pertain to the plant.
  • Ensure proper operation of all required environmental programs, including: air quality management, hazardous/residual/universal waste management (including waste minimization), storm water, ensure compliance and incident free asbestos, fully document process for health and safety permit compliance., etc.
  • Ensure accurate and on-time submission of environmental reports – maintain the EHS calendar.
  • Ensure an effective EHS auditing and inspection process (AHF Products Internal Compliance Audit, Hazardous Waste, etc.).
  • Assist in investigating injuries, ensure the employee receives necessary medical attention, initiates necessary corrective action, and follow up with employee and supervisor on corrective action.
  • Provide total commitment to personal safety and ensure others are working in a safe manner as well.
  • Perform tasks in accordance with proven skill levels as directed by EHS Manager.
  • Participates in Continuous Improvement, also provides suggestions to improve processes and participates on team projects.
  • Work cooperatively with production staff to accomplish tasks and achieve departmental goals.
  • Maintain property, plant, and equipment to support and improve the safe production and performance of the operations.
  • Perform other tasks as assigned.

  • Proven ability to lead cross-functional teams with different opinions to gain consensus on the correct strategy.
  • Strong communication skills
  • Ability to communicate with all levels of the organization
  • Proficient computer skills including MS Office
  • Experience leading projects or groups
  • Ability and willingness to work required hours to support the needs of the plant team
  • Proven ability to recognize potential safety hazards and develop an engineering solution to eliminate.
  • Ability to work self-directed with limited resources and able to meet challenging timelines.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to influence upper management and gain buy in from shop floor end users.
  • Detail-oriented and strong organizational skills.
  • Ability to always maintain appropriate confidentiality.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be able to successfully complete and pass a background check, employment verification and drug screening
  • Positive and Verifiable Work History
  • BS or MS in Environmental Science, Engineering, Safety, Industrial Hygiene or related scientific discipline.
  • Minimum 5 years experience with increasing responsibility in EH&S.
  • Demonstrated success in developing strategies and implementing processes to ensure that the organization is compliant with internal/external requirements.
  • Excellent communication skills, leadership skills, computer proficiency, high motivation, ability to travel, and drive a vehicle.
