The Hampton Health Department is recruiting for an Environmental Health Specialist position. The successful candidate will be self-motivated and able to work independently by scheduling inspections and providing oversight and compliance of all assigned facilities. Also, the successful candidate must be able to communicate effectively and positively with customers and team members.

Duties include inspection, enforcement, investigation and implementation of regulations in all areas of environmental health.

Environmental Health program areas include: food protection, rabies control, tourist establishment and swimming pool inspections, general environmental complaints and emergency preparedness in support of district goals and objectives. Enforcement activities are carried out under close supervision, pending completion of required knowledge, skill and abilities training and certification.

NOTE : The Environmental Health Specialist positions may be filled at the Senior level contingent on VDH experience, training and certification in their environmental health programs.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Knowledge of principals/practices of Environmental and Public Health with particular emphasis in the food protection program.
  • Demonstrated use of software, databases and/or spreadsheets.
  • Ability to: communicate effectively both verbally and written; interpret and apply regulations/procedures; conduct field investigations and inspections independently in all areas of environment health.
  • A valid State Driver’s License is required to operate a state vehicle or if operating a personal vehicle conducting business on behalf of the agency (mileage reimbursed for work-related travel).

Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science in Environmental Health, Environmental Science, Food Technology, or any other related degree.
  • Successful completion of the VDH food protection training modules.
  • VDH standardization in the food protection program.

Special Requirements
Employment is contingent upon satisfactory results of a state and federal criminal history background check and the Department of Social Service’s Child Abuse and Neglect Central Registry check, U.S. HHS IG Exclusion List check, employment reference check and E-Verify. Other financial, credit, driving, or other background checks prior to employment may be required for certain positions. Completion of Statement of Economic Interests will be required upon employment.

VDH requires all Health-Care Personnel (HCP) to provide documentation or evidence of immunity or adequate immunization to the following: hepatitis B, measles, mumps, rubella, and varicella; a one-time dose of tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis (Tdap) vaccine regardless of the interval since the last dose of tetanus-diphtheria (Td) vaccine was administered (Td or Tdap boosters shall be received every 10 years); and the current year’s seasonal influenza vaccination. VDH HCP shall be evaluated for and offered at no charge required, seasonally appropriate vaccines within 10 business days of initial assignment, and annually thereafter, per the CDC’s recommendations. The HCP shall provide written documentation of immunity (personal immunization record, health record, or antibody titers). HCP who does not have documentation of their immunization records may be offered at no charge antibody titers (blood tests) to determine their immunity, or lack thereof, to measles, mumps, rubella, hepatitis B, and varicella. In addition, health care personnel may also be required to have screening for m. tuberculosis. Some environmental positions may require assessment of rabies immunity status; your job category does require assessment of rabies immunity.
