General Statement of Job

Under general supervision, this position performs engineering and project management, and other related assignments. Work involves water and sewer utilities project planning, design, design review, construction administration, distribution and collection system evaluation, data analysis, and preparing a variety of technical reports and documents. Employee must exercise initiative and independent judgment.

Special Duties & Responsibilities

  • Serves as project manager and/or field engineer for assigned projects.
  • Maintains utility information in the County’s GIS system and prepare maps.
  • Prepares, organizes, and maintains utility system drawings and computer models.
  • Assists with the calibration and operation of the Department’s hydraulic distribution and collection systems models.
  • Compiles and evaluates data as it relates to distribution and collection systems operations, maintenance, and capacity analysis.
  • Assists with the Department asset management program.
  • Coordinates work of consulting engineers.
  • Participates in the preparation and review of specifications, plans, cost estimates, contracts and reports.
  • Develops and monitors project budgets and expenditures, including revenues where applicable.
  • Interacts with the public, providing information and responses to inquiries.
  • Reviews site plans and construction plans for compliance.
  • Attends and participates in professional meeting and stays abreast of new trends and innovations in the engineering field.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Minimum Training & Experience

Bachelor's or Associate's Degree in civil engineering, environmental engineering or related field required with related work experience preferred – OR – Any equivalent combination of education, experience and/or training sufficient to demonstrate the knowledge, skills and abilities is acceptable. College level course work in hydraulic engineering is preferred.

Possession of a valid driver's license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Engineer in Training Certification in the Commonwealth of Virginia is desirable.
