Salary Range 14 $21.62 to $29.97/hour

POSITION SUMMARY: The Elementary Head Custodian maintains an attractive sanitary and safe facility by performing a wide variety of cleaning and maintenance functions in both the facility and grounds around the facility; provides adequate arrangements for meetings, classroom activities and events; and minimizes property damage, loss and liability exposure, ensuring that assignments are completed in a safe, proper and timely manner. This position may instruct other custodians assigned to the facility.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education, Training, Experience, Licensure and Certification
  • Experience Required: Prior job-related experience with increasing levels of responsibilities, preferably in school and/or institutional setting.
  • Education Required: High school diploma or equivalent
  • Licenses, Certifications, Bonding, and/or Testing Required: Valid Driver's License and evidence of insurability; Criminal Justice Fingerprint Clearance; current First Aid /CPR Card
Knowledge of:
  • Methods and use of cleaning materials, equipment, and supplies
  • Safe work practices
Skill in:
  • Use of cleaning agents; supplies and equipment
  • Perform basic math to calculate accurate dilution of cleaning agents
  • Performing safe work practices
  • Working from heights of up to 30 feet
  • Providing leadership to others
  • Proficient in the use of computer and Internet based applications, including but not limited to email and systems applications
  • Communicating effectively in English, both verbally and in writing, such as providing instructions

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Performs general cleaning and overall maintenance of school facilities (i.e. classrooms, offices, multipurpose rooms, grounds, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining a sanitary, safe and attractive environment
  • Creates and follows a cleaning schedule for the facility
  • Arranges furnishings and equipment to prepare spaces for internal and community group activities and events
  • Directs personnel as assigned for the purpose of maximizing the efficiency of the workforce and meeting shift requirements
  • Adjusts tasks of custodians as may be necessary for the safe and efficient operation of the school program and activities
  • Maintains a custodial communication system
  • Procures equipment, supplies and materials for the purpose of maintaining availability of required items and completing jobs efficiently
  • Observes the performance of custodial and maintenance staff and shares with supervisors areas where standards of safety, cleaning or working relationships are not being met
  • Familiarizes substitute custodians so they can better fulfill their assignment and responsibilities safely and effectively
  • Prepares and maintains reports and documentation as specified by the district or school administration
  • Assumes responsibility for the general security/safety of the building and reports suspicious activity to the proper authority
  • Operates equipment, including lifts and ladders, in a safe manner
  • Assists the administration in identifying, prioritizing and budgeting for custodial and maintenance needs
  • Create and submit electronic work orders
  • Delivers variety of items (e.g. supplies, mail, packages, furniture, etc.) for the purpose of distributing the materials to the appropriate parties
  • Informs students, other site personnel and supervisor for the purpose of providing information regarding activities, safety and/or proper maintenance of facilities
  • Ensures energy conservation practices are in use
  • Maintain school ground's softscape elements as needed
  • Secures facilities and grounds for the purpose of minimizing property damage, loss and liability and ensuring safety at work site
  • Evaluates situations to take appropriate action and/or direct the situation to the appropriate personnel for resolution
OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS:
  • Cross-trains in a variety of GBSD maintenance and custodial functions, assisting other personnel as may be required for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities
  • Repairs furniture and equipment for the purpose of ensuring that items are available and in safe working condition
  • Supports the relationship between the Gresham-Barlow School District and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with students, staff, and visitors to the building
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned by supervisor
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Ability to:
    • sit, stand or walk for prolonged periods of time
    • climb stairs and ladders
    • talk and hear conversations in a potentially noisy environment
    • use arms, wrists and hands in repetitive movements such as grasping and squeezing
    • use precise control of fingers and hand movement, often in a repetitive motion
    • reach for and handle objects such as tools
    • operate controls requiring manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination
    • use close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus
  • Bending, stooping, kneeling and lifting up to 60 pounds or moving by pushing or pulling up to 100 pounds may also be required on occasion.
  • Ability to work outside in all weather
