Essential Functions and Objectives:

P
rovides instruction and related activities in accordance with the philosophies and procedures of Emily Griffith Technical College resulting in effective delivery of the program and achievement of identified outcomes.

T
he English Language Program in the Language Learning Center at Emily Griffith Technical College is the oldest and largest in the state. Every year over 2000 students come through the programs. Many continue on to career and technical education at EGTC, and many others have different goals.

T
he ELA Part time Instructor will be responsible for one or a few classes at the main campus (1860 Lincoln St), offsite locations (1666 Elmira St, 1370 Xenia St), and/or online classes using Google Meet. The ELA Part-time Instructor will teach classes in the morning, evening, or Saturdays depending on individual availability and preference. The ELA Substitute Instructor will be called to cover classes within our refugee English program (CRESL) or our tuition based community program (PACE). When absences are planned, substitute instructors will have ample notice as well as prepared lesson plans for classes. When absences are unplanned, substitutes may be called with short notice and little to no prepared plan.

F
or in person classes, the ELA Substitute Instructor has access to appropriate technology including a desktop, printer/copier, and location specific classroom technology (projector, smart board, etc.).

  • Works cohesively within the strategic direction, mission, and goals of the institution to effectively teach assigned courses with multiple instructional delivery methods and a focus on effective assessment.
  • Teaches adults and concurrent enrollment students ages 17 and older.
  • Maintains and updates course syllabus and expectations regularly and/or as needed.
  • Writes unit lesson plans, daily lesson plans, and various written and performance assessments in the classroom and lab setting.
  • Communicates patiently and respectfully to students, staff, and parents/guardians and responds to all communications within 48 hours of receipt.
  • Works with partner instructors on coordinating student learning activities and program development.
  • Maintains accurate student records, including attendance, grades, and overall performance using appropriate software systems used by the institution.
  • Supervises and maintains the cleanliness of the classroom/lab; maintains appropriate inventory for all program equipment, materials, and supplies; and oversees and maintains the safety of the students and working environment.
  • Maintains discipline and enforces rules of conduct and behavior in accordance with school policy.
  • Attends and participates in faculty, departmental, advisory committee, and other professional meetings as well as professional development activities to remain current with industry practices and advancements.

K
nowledge, Experience & Other Qualifications:

  • At least two (2) years of experience teaching English to adults.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products, including Word, Excel, and Outlook and Google Suite.

  • Demonstrated successful classroom management skills and the ability to coordinate instructional activities and work with staff and students.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Flexible and creative with strong conflict resolution skills.
  • Ability to direct and monitor the activities of others.
  • Works collaboratively with others on a team.
  • Aptitude for variety and changing expectations in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to evaluate and judge instructional materials and methods.
  • Ability to demonstrate a positive student service attitude, particularly under stress.
  • Demonstrated reliability, as excellent daily attendance is very important to maintain the educational continuity necessary to meet instructional requirements.
  • Broad knowledge of techniques and practices used in related industry.

E
ducation Requirements:

  • Associate's Degree or comparable program with at least 18 credits in a related field.
  • TEFL/TESOL, CELTA or other teaching training certification strongly preferred.
