Drilling Operations Manager

CTL Engineering is seeking a business and technical manager for a geotechnical drilling group. The group consists of a fleet of about 10 drill rigs with various support vehicles and staff consisting of about 5 two- person drill crews. The drill departments are located in Shelbyville, Kentucky, Morgantown, West Virginia and Indianapolis, Indiana. The manager will be responsible for the direction and leadership of all of CTL’s drilling and field exploration business operations. The company generally operates in Ohio, Indiana, West Virginia and Kentucky.
Responsibilities will include all aspects of handling and control of the drilling and sampling division for the Company. This would include but not be limited to:

  • Safety – responsible for implementing and maintaining the company safety culture and improvement in areas that are needed.
  • Staff – responsible for leadership and culture of the drilling division, recruiting competent drillers and support staff, training, and continuing education.
  • Fleet – responsible for fleet management, maintenance, adherence to applicable rules and regulations.
  • CDL drivers and commercial regulations – responsible for maintaining federal and state commercial driver licenses, truck registrations and documentation of all CDL and heavy truck licensure according to USDOT and FMSCA regulations
  • Equipment – responsible for equipment maintenance, equipment calibrations, inventory, purchasing and inventory.
  • Sampling equipment – develop and maintain soil and rock sampling tools, make sure proper sampling tools are used in sampling soil and rock specimens, expand our sampling capabilities to in-situ tests (pressure meters, dilatometers, CPT, seismic site classifications)
  • Quality – responsible for making sure drillers and support staff are trained in the appropriate sampling and drilling methods, and adherence to company quality manual.
  • Work Scope development – assisting the engineering dept in developing applicable exploration scopes and proposals.
  • Business development – work on internal projects as well as working with other firms as a drilling subcontractor.

Desired Experience.

  • 10 years or more working in the geotechnical area.
  • Experience with working in an outdoor environment.
  • Supervisory experience
  • Experience in managing equipment and personnel.
  • Ability to lift tools and augers up to 50 lbs.
  • Travel required
  • Valid driver’s license, CDL preferred.
