Ending homelessness is a bold and complex undertaking. It requires heart, collaboration, and resources. But when we dream big, amazing things happen. Roof Above is a nonprofit organization that operates a day service center, three year-round shelters for men, and the four-month, seasonal community-based winter shelter “Room in The Inn.” Beyond homeless services, Roof Above provides more than 400 units of supportive housing, through organizationally owned single-site apartment complexes, through scattered-site apartments via partnerships with landlords and property providers throughout Mecklenburg County, and a housing-based drug treatment program.

POSITION SUMMARY:
Door Assistants are part-time (up to 20/hours a week) and responsible for maintaining orderly entry during pre-registration and registration to the Room in the Inn program, at the Day Services Center. The position works with each night’s Coordinator and Assigner to pace which groups enter. Door Assistants decide on which regular days they will work and are responsible for covering for each other.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

• Appropriately communicating entry process to guests.
• Implementing the plan of entry set by each night’s Coordinator and Assigner.
• Maintaining order outside of entry and ensuring that groups are in appropriate areas, with the help of security guard.

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Collaborate with the night’s Coordinator and Room in the Inn Manager about neighbor issues.
• Participate in staff training and development activities as directed.
• Be a part of the volunteer team and assume other duties as appropriate and as able.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

• Knowledge and skills in de-escalation/conflict management.
• Ability to work with a diverse group of volunteers and staff.
• Ability to communicate effectively; interact appropriately with service partners, volunteers, visitors, and neighbors.
• Respectful and courteous to others, ability to cooperate. Is attentive to the concerns, ideas, and issues expressed by others. Shows consideration for and values the opinions of neighbors, other staff, and volunteers and donors.
• Demonstrate proper judgment and decision-making skills. Secure relevant information, appropriately identify causes of problems, and take or recommend appropriate course of action.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

• Must pass pre-employment and/or random drug and alcohol screenings as a condition of hire and/or ongoing employment.
• Attention to detail with exceptional organizational and communication skills
• Must be able to stand and/or sit for extended periods of time.
• Must be able to lift at least 15 pounds and engage in physical labor.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
Individual must be able to work with limited supervision, embrace a fast-paced environment, and be comfortable de-escalating negative behaviors with diverse individuals.
