Job description
DOG WALKER, Part-Time
Austin Pets Alive! (APA!) is one of Austin’s most dynamic and best-loved nonprofits. The organization is the leader in the No Kill Movement nationally and is considered a national thought leader in animal welfare. APA! locally rescues, treats, and adopts out 10,000 homeless dogs and cats each year, providing the safety net for Austin’s most at-risk shelter pets, which helps Austin to be a No-Kill City, while also assisting other communities in saving homeless animals. The organization is distinguished by the scrappiness of its grassroots, non-traditional community-based animal rescue work. The organization continues to innovate best practices to save sheltered lives and teaches its renowned No Kill lifesaving model to 400 students annually, who attend apprenticeships at APA!’s Maddie’s® Lifesaving Academy, and to hundreds of animal welfare professionals who attend the organization’s annual American Pets Alive! Conference.

The Dog Walking team provides immense support to the Dog Care team. An APA! Dog Walker is responsible for ensuring all onsite dogs get at least two outings per day and to provide other care duties as necessary. By ensuring all the dogs get walked on a regular schedule, it allows the Dog Care Specialists to provide care outside of walking. This is all essential to the Austin Pets Alive! (APA!) mission of keeping Austin No Kill by creating a positive, loving experience for the dogs while in our care. The Dog Walkers also work closely with Dog Care volunteers and reports to the Dog Care Manager on duty. This is a part-time, nonexempt position.
Before applying, please be aware that Austin Pets Alive! takes in the animals that have no other option before a euthanasia decision is made. This means our on-site dog population is typically large breed dogs, many with some behavior issues like jumping, stranger-danger, leash pulling, hyperactivity and some with a bite history. We will train all dog walkers to handle these dogs, starting with the easiest and gradually working up to the most difficult dogs. All dog walkers and kennel staff are committed to walking the dogs at least twice a day. No dog is skipped unless there is a medical reason to do so. You must by physically fit and strong, willing to be patient and focused on each individual dog's needs and training regiments.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Walk dogs to playgroup or to play yards for enrichment
  • Ensure dogs have water
  • Perform daily wellness checks, lock checks, and other opening/closing duties
QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS & EXPECTATIONS:
  • Must be able to handle large dogs safely
  • Must be proficient with email and spreadsheets
  • Must be able to pass both Level 1 & 2 dog walking training
  • Some dog handling experience is required

  • Willing to offer help in other areas in times of need
  • Diligent in your daily activities and putting the welfare of the animals at the forefront of all you do
  • Willing and committed to working well with volunteers and staff in all roles
  • Must be available to work 5-hour morning or evening shifts, 4 days per week
COMPENSATION: $15.00 per hour
LOCATION:
  • APA! Main - Town Lake Animal Center 1156 West Cesar Chavez Austin, TX 78703
BENEFITS: All employees are eligible for the APA! Employee Assistance Program and fully subsidized emergency pet insurance coverage.
