SOUTH CAROLINA JUDICIAL BRANCH

Court Services’ Judges Scheduling section at the South Carolina Judicial Branch is seeking a motivated individual to join their team as Docket Liaison.

The Docket Liaison serves as liaison for assigned judicial circuits, oversees case docketing in General Sessions courts and collaborates with Unified Judicial System stake holders to improve the efficiency of the movement of cases through that system. Researches court operations and policies related to efficient management of criminal case dockets. Provides written and oral communication to Circuit Court Judges, Clerks of Court, Circuit Solicitors, and Public Defenders. Reports statistical data to the Chief Justice and State Court Administrator.

  • Circuit 01 –
    Calhoun, Orangeburg, Dorchester Counties.
  • Circuit 02 – Aiken, Barnwell, Bamberg Counties.
  • Circuit 03 – Lee, Sumter, Clarendon, Williamsburg Counties.
  • Circuit 04 – Dillon, Chesterfield, Darlington, Marlboro Counties.
  • Circuit 05 – Kershaw, Richland Counties.
  • Circuit 06 – Chester, Fairfield, Lancaster Counties.
  • Circuit 09 – Berkeley, Charleston Counties.
  • Circuit 10 – Oconee, Anderson Counties.
  • Circuit 11 – McCormick, Edgefield, Lexington, Saluda Counties.
  • Circuit 16 – York, Union Counties.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE POSITION
This job bulletin represents general duties for this position and is not intended to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

  • In conjunction with the Chief Judge for Administrative Purposes (CJAP) and Circuit Solicitor, provides support services for the creation of General Sessions dockets for each county within assigned judicial circuits with a focus and priority on moving and disposing of cases with the most age first.

  • Provide advice and recommendations to the CJAP for the most effective docket management resulting in improvement of county benchmarks within assigned judicial circuits.
  • Collaborate with the County Clerk of Court, Circuit Solicitor, Public Defender, and CJAP concerning the cases set on the docket for each term of court.

  • Develop forms and prepare monthly reports detailing statistics of criminal case data for review by the Chief Justice and State Court Administrator. Continuously improve reporting methods.

  • Interact with judges, court personnel, attorneys, and other stakeholders toward the objective of preparing dockets which facilitate the timely movement of criminal matters in the court system.

  • Attend and observe court proceedings capturing outcomes, status of cases, and numbers of cases completed.

  • Document number of continuances, reasons for continuances, and other relevant case information to assist in preparation of future dockets.

  • Perform specialized clerical duties to support efficient and effective courtroom operations and conduct self in a professional and courteous manner at all times.

  • Attends meetings or training sessions as required.

  • Perform all other duties as assigned.


  • Bachelor's degree and two (2) years; OR
  • Associates' degree or paralegal certificate and three (3) years; OR
  • High school diploma and five (5) years'
  • work experience in court administration, a law practice, or in a court-related office such as the Clerk of Court, Judge's Chambers, Solicitor, or Public Defender.
  • Relevant experience in administration, management, or support service functions may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year for year basis.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND OTHER CHARACTERISTICS

Knowledge of:

  • South Carolina judicial system.


Skilled in:

  • Computer skills;
  • Microsoft applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint);
  • State trial court processes and procedures; and
  • Being detailed oriented and possess excellent time management and organizational skills.

Ability to:

  • Communicate effectively, both written and verbal;
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with county employees, attorneys, elected and appointed officials, court personnel and the general public;
  • Maintain confidentiality and exercise a high level of discretion; and
  • Commit to punctuality and demonstrate a strong, consistent, dependable work ethic.

Special requirement:

  • Must have dependable transportation as this position requires statewide travel, some overnight.
