Stevenson School is a PK-12 co-educational, college-preparatory, boarding and day school with enrollment of 770 students on two campuses in beautiful Central Coast California. The Upper Division campus (Grades 9-12) is located in Pebble Beach. The Lower/Middle Campus (Grades PK-8) is in nearby Carmel-by-the-Sea. Stevenson School is seeking a Director of Summer and Auxiliary Programs (DSAP) to begin July 1, 2023. Reporting to the Chief Financial and Operating Officer, the DSAP is primarily responsible for the administration, management, and supervision of all summer and auxiliary programs including budgeting, scheduling, billing, execution, training, compliance, and evaluation. The DSAP will also contribute to the strategic planning process for the continuing evolution of the School’s summer program of mission-consistent boarding and day camps, sport-specific camps, professional development programs for teachers and school administrators, and other enrichment opportunities, and shape their further expansion in order to advance the School’s mission, enhance admissions outreach, and generate revenue. The DSAP is the primary point of contact with administrative responsibility for those programs run by external non-profit organizations that are hosted on Stevenson’s campus. This is a 12-month/year, full time role constructed as a .75 FTE DSAP function to be combined with other school duties to create a 1.0 FTE, with a considerable time commitment required during the summer months.
The ideal candidate will be a dynamic and team-oriented leader who is strategic, resourceful, innovative, entrepreneurial, committed, practical, effective, and focused on achieving and sustaining operational excellence; a creative self-starter who brings wisdom, perspective, confidence and excellent problem solving skills to the position The individual will possess significant prior experience with and expertise in camp and auxiliary program administration, an understanding of the needs related to residential programs, very high level logistical and organizational skills, and an enthusiasm to engage with internal and external constituencies to advance the mission of the school through this programming.
Responsibilities Include:

  • Develop and administer mission-consistent programs and partnerships that support institutional goals
  • Participate in designing and implementing a strategic plan for the summer campus that capitalizes on the School's location, facilities, and areas of current or emerging strength
  • Refine the structures, policies, and practices that ensure effective interdepartmental communication and collaboration regarding summer and auxiliary programming
  • Manage the impact on the School community related to the use of campus facilities

and human resources by summer and auxiliary programs

  • Oversee the management of all summer and auxiliary programs, providing the highest level of customer service to all clients
  • Ensure the safety and wellbeing of all summer and auxiliary program participants
  • Organize and supervise all program usage of school assets, prioritizing and allocating capacity and resources
  • Schedule, coordinate, and appropriately communicate summer and auxiliary program use of facilities, services, and security needs to all stakeholders
  • Cultivate and steward essential partnerships
  • Ensure that all auxiliary programs are in compliance with applicable regulations of licensing and governing entities, adhere to the highest standards of quality and excellence, and operate in accordance with the School's policies and procedures
  • Maintain focus on operational improvement and process documentation and management
  • Supervise and support all summer and auxiliary programs personnel
  • Work with the director of security and Chief Financial and Operating Officer (CFOO) to develop and apply a comprehensive risk management plan
  • Work with the CFOO and Director of Facilities and Capital Projects (DFCP) to create policies, protocols, and procedures for the use of facilities, including pricing
  • Work with the Chief Information Officer (CIO) to develop an efficient online admissions process for the School’s proprietary programs
  • Prepare a comprehensive annual budget, including, in consultation with the CFOO, appropriate accounting for overhead costs and use of capital assets
  • Monitor revenues and expenses in accordance with budgetary restrictions for bottom line performance across all programs, and prepare reports as needed
  • Work with program directors to ensure peak financial performance
  • In coordination with the CFOO and Director of Human Resources (DHR), establish appropriate compensation for all summer and auxiliary program employees
  • With the support of the business office, coordinate payroll and manage billing for all summer camps and programs
  • With support from the communications team, develop a comprehensive marketing strategy for summer and auxiliary programs, producing content, as needed, for the School’s website, social media, and other appropriate vehicles
  • In collaboration with program directors and guidance from the DHR, oversee the recruitment and hiring of Stevenson's summer and auxiliary program employees, and ensure all third party employees are hired and managed in compliance with the School’s employment policies and applicable regulations
  • Ensure that all necessary and required employment forms, including background checks, are completed and on file
  • Provide comprehensive orientation and training for summer and auxiliary program staff
  • Coordinate and conduct performance evaluations of all summer and auxiliary program directors, and ensure that they perform analogous evaluations of their employees
  • Other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications:

  • Five years of summer and auxiliary program experience at the leadership level
  • Bachelor’s or advanced degree
  • Strong financial acumen with demonstrated ability to develop and manage a budget
  • Well-developed collaborative work style
  • Familiarity with youth development programming, coaching, and knowledge of current regulations, applicable laws, trends, best practices and new developments in the field
  • Excellent project management and organizational skills
  • Knowledge and skill to negotiate and manage client program agreements
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Highly developed analytical skills with the ability to quickly and regularly adjust strategy based on the School’s needs
  • Strategic thinking ability to understand the full scope of projects while seeing individual tasks through to completion
  • Experience with Microsoft Office products, Google applications, and database management; helpful if familiar with website development and digital media
  • A positive outlook and sense of humor appropriate to the age group
  • Impeccable integrity and extraordinary work ethic
  • Ability to work occasional evening and weekend hours, as needed
