Essential Duties & Responsibilities

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty and responsibility satisfactorily.

  • Develop, maintain and periodically updates written policies and procedures that govern the daily functions of the nursing department.
  • Assist the Quality Assurance Committee in developing and implementing appropriate plans of action to correct identified deficiencies.
  • Develop, maintain and periodically update written job descriptions for each level of nursing personnel.
  • Participate in surveys and inspections made by authorized government agencies.
  • Makes written and oral reports/recommendations to the Administrator as necessary/required concerning the operation of the Nursing Department.
  • Assist in determining the staffing needs of the Nursing Department necessary to meet the total nursing needs of the residents.
  • Assist the Administrator in the recruitment and selection process of nursing employees.
  • Assign a sufficient number of licensed practical and/or registered nurses for each tour of duty to ensure that quality care is maintained.
  • Develop work assignments and schedule duty hours and/or assist nursing supervisory staff in completing and performing such tasks.
  • Make daily rounds of the nursing service department to ensure that all nursing service personnel are performing their work assignments accordance with acceptable nursing standards.
  • Monitor absenteeism to ensure that an adequate number of nursing care personnel are on duty at all times.
  • Make appropriate reports to the Administrator as required or as may be necessary, including departmental performance evaluations.
  • Participates in the interviewing and selection of residents for admission to the facility.
  • Reviewing Quality measures report.
  • Reviewing the hospitalization rates.
  • Provides the Administrator with information relative to the nursing needs of the resident and the nursing department’s ability to meet those needs.
  • Develop, implement and maintain an effective orientation program that orients the new employee to the facility, its policies and procedures, and to his/her job positions and duties.
  • Provide leadership training that includes the administrative and supervisory principles essential for all nursing staff.
  • Assist support service in developing, implementing and conducting in-service training programs that relate to the nursing department.
  • Assist in developing safety standards for the Nursing Department.
  • Maintain knowledge of regulations governing Long Term Care facilities.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required Education and/or Experience

  • Valid RN License in state of Kentucky
  • One to three (1-3) years of management or supervisory experience in long-term care, acute care, or geriatric nursing preferred.

Physical Demands and Abilities

The physical demands and work environment characteristics described herein are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential duties of this job.   • Must be able to move intermittently throughout the workday.
  • Must be able to cope with the mental an emotional stress of the position.
  • Must function independently and have flexibility, personal integrity and the ability to work effectively with the resident, personnel and support agencies.
  • Must be able to relate to and work with ill, disabled, elderly, emotionally upset and at times hostile people with the facility.
  • Must be able to lift, push, pull and move a minimum of fifty (50) pounds.
  • Must be able to assist in the evacuation of residents.

Other Requirements

  • Maintain the confidentiality of all resident care information.
  • Monitor nursing care to ensure that all residents are treated fairly, and with kindness, dignity and respect.
  • Ensure that all nursing care is provided in privacy and nursing service personnel knock before entering the resident’s room.
  • Ensure that all nursing service personnel are knowledgeable of the residents’ rights and responsibilities.
  • Assure that all nurse’s aides have completed an approved training program.
  • Director may be required to attend activities outside the facility to stay abreast of new developments, best practices, and statutory and regulatory changes.
  • Maintain the confidentiality of all resident information.
  • May be required to work holidays.
  • Pursuant to the Drug Free Workplace Act of 1988, all employees must remain drug free and alcohol free when reporting to work, while at work and while engaged in any work related activities.
  • Comply with all Healthcare Act rules and regulations and any related laws and regulations.

1 year: Prior management/supervisory experience is required, preferably in long-term care, acute care, restorative or geriatric nursing. Floor nursing supervisory experience with direct reports will be considered.
