South Dakota Mines is searching for a Director of Library Services for its Devereaux Library. The ideal candidate is a welcoming individual with excellent communication and customer service skills and a desire to develop and grow Library programs and services. Under the general direction and oversight of the Associate Vice President for Student Success, the Director will be responsible for oversight, planning, organizing, coordinating, directing, and participating in a balanced program of library services for students, faculty, and administration at South Dakota Mines. This key member of the Student Success Division will lead the development and implementation of a shared vision of having Library Services at the center of instructional, and cultural life at the University, and assure Library Services is an inclusive space for learning that is responsive to wide range of needs and supports the University’s priorities to enhance the student experience.
The Director will be responsible for planning, directing, and coordinating the daily operation of library services. The ideal candidate will be well-versed in library reference and instruction, operating within a progressive and modern library environment, and library administration, and be committed to the values and philosophy of the Division of Student Success.
Qualifications:
  • A Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science or a related field AND five or more years of professional experience in an academic library
  • Ability to demonstrate progressive leadership, management, and supervisory responsibilities
  • Proven ability to lead library staff in a collaborative management style
  • Demonstrated fiscal responsibility
  • Demonstrated experience in developing new programs and services based on recent developments and trends in library science, library services, community building, and technology
  • Excellent skills in both verbal and written communication, including instruction, to different audiences
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment, and to handle multiple projects simultaneously
  • Excellent problem-solving skills
  • Experience working with high-performing, multi-disciplinary teams
  • Commitment to university service and meeting the needs of library constituents
  • Innovative problem-solving skills with the ability to identify, support, and implement creative and viable solutions
  • Experience in library administration
  • Experience in library reference and instruction
  • Flexibility to provide support in person and online
  • Experience and comfort supervising staff
  • Experience providing reference and library services in an online or hybrid environment


Key Responsibilities:
  • Work across academic departments and student programs to embed library services into courses, events, and co-curricular activities.
  • Participate in a full range of outreach services, including reference, instruction, and collection development.
  • Assure the Library is an inclusive space for learning that is responsive to needs and supports the University’s priorities to enhance the student experience.
  • Lead the development and implementation of a shared vision of having Library Services at the center of instructional and cultural life at the University.
  • Lead, mentor and encourage a team of librarians and staff in collegiality, collaboration, and user-centered services.
  • Develop and manage a multi-faceted budget.
  • Assume responsibility for library services including instruction, technology, collections development, strategic planning, organizational development, assessment, and outreach.
  • Build cooperative relationships with on-campus and off-campus constituencies as an advocate for Library Services.
  • Represent Library Services on statewide, consortia and national committees
