Job Overview:

Supervises and coordinates all aspects of laboratory operations affecting other hospital departments and outpatient services. Utilizes a participative management approach in conducting management responsibilities. Keeps employees informed of hospital issues and involves staff in department decision-making and planning. Conducts or assures regular/ongoing performance evaluations on each staff member.


Primary Scope of Responsibilities:

  • Personnel Management - Manage staffing, including recruitment, supervision, scheduling, development, evaluation, and disciplinary actions.
  • Fiscal Responsibility - Develop business case justifications and cost/benefit analyses for Department spending and initiatives. Develop and review budget for department and ensure it complies with stated goals, guidelines, and objectives.
  • Regulatory & Accreditation Compliance - Develop and implement all Department policies and procedures.
  • Staff Development – Ensure that staff members are aligned with department and organizational goals. Provide continued educational opportunities to support those goals.
  • Departmental Quality & Performance Improvement – Develop and implement strategies to continually improve quality and performance of the department as it relates to the mission and goals of the organization.
  • Demonstrates purposeful service excellence through exceeding patient and coworker expectations.
  • Represents the department/hospital as a dedicated, courteous, and responsive employee
  • Records pertinent documentation in accordance with regulatory requirements, professional standards and hospital policy.
  • Adheres to federal, state and hospital rules and regulations concerning HIPAA privacy and security.
  • Follows Hospital compliance plan and policies, including the Code of Conduct.
  • Participates in required training for compliance related activities (HIPAA, Compliance, Patient Safety, TJC, etc.)
  • In charge of the laboratory Quality Assurance Program; works with the Pathologist in setting up and routinely updating the Quality Assurance Program; in charge of collecting data; submits Q.A. reports to the Director of Medical Records when required; routinely reviews Q.A. data with Pathologist.
  • Keeps Pathologist and Administrator current on the status of the laboratory in all areas, with both formal and informal meetings as needed. In conjunction with the Pathologist, sets overall departmental objectives, both short- and long-term.
  • Works diligently to meet any accreditation standards required for laboratory certification (CLIA, CAP, FDA, etc…) and corrects any deficiencies noted immediately.
  • Collects and submits data for monthly reporting, including quality control data from various departments of the laboratory, laboratory statistics for Medical Records, and workload units and percent efficiency data. With Pathologist, reviews previous month’s quality control data and proficiency testing to assure that excellent quality of lab testing is maintained.
  • Supervises maintenance of all laboratory equipment; orders replacements to maintain stock of supplies; with the Pathologist, supervises and/or participates in the collection of data for evaluation of new testing procedures or equipment.
  • Coordinates all activities affecting the “marketing” of laboratory services both within the hospital, in the community and in the Roaring Fork Valley.
  • Handles conflict resolution both intra- and interdepartmentally. Counsels and disciplines effectively.
  • Conducts objective, concise, and timely performance appraisals on department staff. Performance appraisals are delivered to employees no later than one month after their review date.
  • Maintains open communication with staff. Informs them of issues and allows input. Holds staff accountable for keeping current via email. Holds monthly staff meetings and forwards agenda and/or minutes to EMG member.
  • Maintains cooperative working relationship with hospital personnel and physicians in order to resolve problems and to enhance smooth and efficient delivery of services.
  • Seeks physician input and responds with follow through to address concerns.
  • Reviews patient survey responses and oversees appropriate follow through. Thoroughly documents problem follow-up and measures taken to prevent recurrence.
  • Responds to 100% of patient surveys within 2 weeks of receipt
  • Demonstrates positive behaviors and maintains strong interpersonal relationships.
  • Aligns with and supports hospital Mission, Vision, Values and Goals. Appropriately represents Management perspective to staff.
  • Responds on a timely basis to requests, including phone mail, written, and verbal requests.
  • Plans and controls departmental staffing:

a. Follows the procedures and processes for interviewing and hiring staff

b. Matches candidate’s skills to requirements of the job.

  • Demonstrates responsibility and accountability for own professional decision making and professional growth.

Population Specific Criteria:

  • Demonstrates the ability to assess and interact with customers of all ages, recognizing language and learning barriers, and technology challenges.
  • Able to state his/her duties during a code pink drill.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Five years’ experience in a clinical laboratory, preferably with some previous management experience.
  • Ability to read and communicate effectively in English
  • Ability to concentrate and show attention to detail
  • Relatively high degree of analytical abilities
  • Strong interpersonal skills required
  • Ability to work independently

Education/Certification Requirements:

  • At least three years of college with courses in biology, chemistry, and mathematics.
  • Successful completion of a supervised one-year clinical internship, resulting in a Bachelor’s Degree.

Benefits & Compensation:

Hire-in rates of pay are based upon the relevance of years of experience, education and certifications. Our talent acquisition team will help you understand how your direct experience will be considered.

Pay range for new hires: $50.73 - $65.95/hr
