Position Overview:

Follows Department Manager guidelines for Montrose Memorial Hospital. Responsible for oversight of the Laboratory operations and personnel performing testing and reporting test results. The Laboratory Director is under the primary administrative supervision of the Chief Operating Officer and primary medical supervision of the Pathologists.

Essential Functions:

a) Responsible for policies and procedures acceptable to regulatory agencies in consultation with the Hospital Administration and Pathologist in concurrence with Administration and Medical policies.

b) Completes department CQI and Quality Assurance.

c) Maintains appropriate staff for the proper operation of the department.

d) Responsible for programs for staff continuing education.

e) Responsible for providing departmental orientation and annual evaluations of Laboratory personnel.

f) Oversees the Laboratory, general supervisors, technical and clerical staff.

g) Responsible for the Laboratory safety plan.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to see, talk and hear. The employee frequently is required to sit and use hands along with fingers, to handle or feel. The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.

Qualifications & Skills:

a) Education: Three years of academic studies at an accredited college. Completion of 12 consecutive months of internship in an accredited school of Medical Technology, leading to a Bachelor's Degree. Required national registration by the ASCP or equivalent or equally qualified through examination by the Health Education and Welfare accreditation program.

b) Training & Experience: Must have a minimum of 10 years laboratory experience. Must have supervisory experience with management experience desirable. Must have strong organizational skills along with problem resolution skills. Must have strong employee relation skills and patient management skills.

c) Job Knowledge: Operational ability in all lab areas. Relates well with various people and personalities. Demonstrates good judgment and problem solving skills in a variety of staff and patient-related situations.
