Roof Above is NC’s most comprehensive homeless service provider. Our mission is to unite our community to end homelessness, one life at a time. Focusing on individuals experiencing homelessness, Roof Above offers everything from street outreach to shelter to Rapid Rehousing to Permanent Supportive Housing. Roof Above’s services and programs reach over 1,200 individuals every day across seven campuses in Charlotte (up to 14 campuses in COVID). Roof Above was born through the merger of Urban Ministry Center and Men’s Shelter of Charlotte in 2019.

POSITION SUMMARY
The Director of Housing Navigation is a position to ensure the Roof Above and specifically the shelter program is focused on its primary outcome – ending homelessness for guests seeking our services. The Director of Housing Navigation will supervise a team of housing specialists and income specialists inside the shelter to connect guests with housing programs quickly and effectively through a variety of services. This position will lead a team of Housing Specialists, Income Specialists, and a Nurse Practitioner housed within 2 shelter locations. The position is a member of the shelters’ leadership team and will be a member of the agency wide Extended Leadership team ensuring that this role has a significant voice in shaping the overall policies of Roof Above.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Responsible for implementing an overall array of services that will assist guests in quickly connecting with housing.
  • Supervise and support Housing Specialists to implement a process that quickly connects shelter guests to housing opportunities
  • Supervise and support Income Specialists to implement a process that quickly connects shelter guests to employment opportunities.
  • Utilize HMIS data in decision making of best practices for the Housing Navigation Team.
  • Track and report monthly on overall program outcomes. Modify programming, as needed, to improve outcomes
  • Work closely with Shelter Leadership to assist with guest appeals, grievances, and challenging guest situations
  • Works collaboratively with leaders of single site and scatter site housing programs to streamline referral process and develop best practices for housing placement
  • Serve on Roof Above Extended Leadership team to guide and lead the overall organization

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS REQUIRED

  • A Bachelor’s degree in social work, psychology, counseling, or a related field required, Masters’ degree preferred
  • Minimum of 4 years’ experience as a case manager or social worker.
  • Supervisory experience and the ability to effectively coach, monitor, and motivate staff and volunteers.
  • Prior experience working with homeless populations preferred
  • Passion for connecting individuals with housing and the persistence to carry out the work
  • Understanding of mental illness, effective crisis intervention techniques, and motivational interviewing
  • Ability to work independently with minimal daily supervision and ability to initiate projects with limited direction.
  • Demonstrated experience in managing details.
  • Ability to interact with staff, guests, volunteers, donors, stakeholders, and partners.
  • Ability to prioritize appropriately when facing multiple responsibilities and tasks.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both written and oral.
  • Comfort with Microsoft Excel and with basic data analysis

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be certified in CPR and First Aid or willingness and ability to complete certification within 60 days of hire.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT
Responsibilities for the Director of Housing Navigation will require flexible scheduling, and can require work in the evening, weekends, and occasionally on holidays. Will primarily work between shelter campuses, though some work will occur with the community. The environment can be fast-paced and demanding.
