GLIDE’s Director, Center for Social Justice (DCSJ) supports the strategic design, alignment, and development of CSJ’s strategic initiatives, assists in the oversight of program operations, coaching of program managers and directors, manage relationships with partner agencies and institutions, and represents GLIDE’s strategic interests both internally and externally. This position is expected to lead, facilitate, and coach project teams on how to shepherd ideas from conception to execution, evaluation, and institutionalization using inclusive communication, effective goal setting, and work planning. This position will also partner directly with the Director of Social Justice (Experiential Learning) to scale and operationalize GLIDE/CSJ’s portfolio of racial justice and reconciliation initiatives. This position occasionally works nontraditional hours/weekends and is expected to work on major holidays such as Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, and Christmas Day. Predictable onsite attendance is expected for most of the regular workweek.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Support SDCSJ and CSJ Team to design, develop and implement programs that result in measurable impact to fulfill GLIDE Forward.
  • Directly lead projects and/or teams to implement specific program projects and events that further the integration of CSJ’s social and racial justice initiatives across GLIDE.
  • Lead development and implementation of new strategic initiatives and opportunities that arise in alignment with GLIDE Forward.
  • Collaborate with GLIDE’s Programs to identify advocacy opportunities related to CSJ’s policy agenda.
  • Work collaboratively with SDCSJ, CSJ Team, and CALI to develop program outcomes especially as it pertains to CSJ’s strategic initiatives; and provide input and support on implementing and institutionalizing data collection practices in CSJ to improve impact measurement.
  • Work collaboratively with SDCSJ and Fund Development to identify, cultivate, and maintain partnerships with funders, donors, and other entities that support CSJ and GLIDE Forward.
  • Partner with SDCSJ and Finance Team to develop and manage CSJ’s annual budget.
  • Assess emergent situations brought by CSJ Team, GLIDE’s program staff, and internal and external stakeholders and collaborate with SDCSJ on how to reallocate and/or advocate for resources to respond compassionately and strategically.
  • Act on behalf of the SDCSJ, both when specifically deputized and in the case of their absence, to oversee successful operations of CSJ and to maintain important community partnerships and relationships.

SUPERVISION:

  • Directly supervises Sr. Manager Policy, Community Engagement Manager, Advocacy Manager, and the Social Justice Program Coordinator. Work closely with the SDCSJ to plan and advance CSJ’s racial justice and empathy initiatives
  • Ensure that CSJ’s programs and initiatives lead to campaigns to bring about change in communities and systems.
  • Coach and mentor direct reports regarding performance, problem analysis and resolution, and people management. Ensure the development and retention of direct reports by growing and investing in their knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Consistently communicate responsibilities and expectations using tools such as work plans, performance evaluations, regular feedback.
  • Work with SDCSJ and HR to resolve personnel issues in accordance with GLIDE’s policies and procedures.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Expertise in leading the design and implementation of effective influence campaigns in a social/racial justice context.
  • Proven track record implementing strategic direction, development and execution of social and racial justice influence programs, campaigns, and movements.
  • Sound judgment and strong leadership skills; experience developing staff professionally and building solid teams.
  • Ability to research, analyze, and communicate written and verbal reports of key ideas to internal and external. Strong analytical skills. Ability to evaluate programs and interpret outcomes.
  • Ability to work with a variety of internal and external constituencies. A team player who can interrelate and operate effectively with peers and other associates within a collegial, yet demanding work environment. Ability to effectively run meetings and lead work groups to achieve defined goals.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks, balance multiple assignments, meet deadlines, and thrive in a complex environment with multiple and shifting priorities.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Ability to work effectively across cultures. Demonstrates a commitment to learning, communicating, and working respectfully with people different from themselves.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

  • MPP or MA and 7 -10 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Prior management experience in a social justice-oriented organization, program, or campaign initiative.
  • Record of success managing mid-size teams and multiple sub-divisions.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze, understand, and integrate current events in multiple and sometimes disparate social justice frameworks.
  • Experience working in a community-based social service agency with adults and families in relationship to homelessness and poverty and the problems that often come alongside these experiences helpful.
  • Exceptional writing and speaking skills. Demonstrated success in communicating on social justice issues with a wide range of audiences.
  • Broad writing experience: persuasive and analytical writing for public audiences, internal stakeholders, social media, press, and community partners. Capable of communicating on behalf of the organization’s interests at the levels of both mission and operations.
