JOB TITLE: Pre Trip Maintenance / "C" Service Center Mechanic

REPORTS TO: Director of Fleet Management / Field Maintenance Supervisor / Lead Mechanic

OVERVIEW OF ROLE: To effective check "outbound" trailers to ensure safe, compliant operation and complete repairs, inspections and service of all company equipment in a safe, timely and cost efficient manner.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Knowledge, experience and capability to evaluate trailers and complete "Minor" trailer repairs
• Knowledge and understanding of Safety related items on Trailers to effectively diagnose any potential defects prior to trailer being loaded.
• Knowledge of all State and Federal inspection guidelines to properly determine if trailer is compliant.
• Knowledge, experience and capability to properly diagnose and make necessary "Minor" repairs to trailer electrical systems.
• Diagnose any mechanical, electrical or other potential equipment related failure related to trailers and appropriately report the defect to lead mechanic on-duty.
• Qualified to perform all types of Preventative Maintenance procedures on equipment
• Knowledge, experience and capability to properly diagnose and make necessary repairs to trailer systems such as :

Electrical systems
Air Brake Systems, Including ABS System
Liftgate Repairs
Doors Components (Roll-up and Swing Doors)
Suspension, Slider and Frame
Roof Repairs
Body, Scuff liner, Floor Repairs
Tire Sizes and designs
Dolly Legs

• Properly complete State and / or Federal Inspection procedures as required by law.
• Capable of operating Oxygen / Acetylene Torches and Capable of Welding (Stick, Tig and / or Mig).
• Ability to drive a tractor & trailer in Ward yard -- on premises.
• Maintain clean work area.
• Diagnose any mechanical, electrical or other breakdown or failure related to trailers, tractors, & trucks including
• Complete all paper work and records in an accurate and timely manner.

Repair orders - complete repair order and note all comments.
Parts - identify parts being used so they are properly charged out.
Shop cards - properly complete shop cards, daily.
Computer repair order system

• Perform work in a safe, efficient manner.
• Meet established productivity goals.
• Fully support all technologies and processes, introduced by Ward, that are intended to improve efficiencies and/or the customer experience. Support would include adherence to training programs, guidelines and processes associated with these systems

• REQUIREMENTS:

• Must Possess a valid driver's license
• Must be able to read and write, complete company and governmental forms, and understand written company policies and governmental regulations.
• Must be able to understand and complete forms necessary to the movement of freight in the industry; for example, road manifests, freight bills, hazardous material labels, etc.
• Must have a working knowledge of or the ability to acquire knowledge of the procedures necessary to perform all aspects of freight handling in a safe and efficient manner, including properly planning and loading trailers. Experience in forklift operation preferred.
• Must be able to work the required hours.
• Must participate in random drug testing of all non-DOT employees.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

• After job offer, must meet or exceed medical standards of the US Dept. of Transportation and successfully pass company requirements.
• Must be able to pass all medical qualifications for a D.O.T. physical (even those applicants who do not have a CDL) as stated in the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations.
• Must be able to move, operate, lift, and store specialized equipment that includes, but not limited to welding equipment, hand tools, shop machines, and power.
• May require working underneath the trailer, tractor or truck.
• Must be able to enter / exit cab using footholds, ladders and handholds where available.
• Must be able to spend 80% of the day standing and 20% of the day walking on surfaces such as concrete, wood, and metal.
• Must be able to successfully pass a post offer physical agility test, specifically designed for the tasks associated with the position. The physical demands for this position are "Heavy", as defined by the Dictionary of Occupational Titles: Exerting 50 to 100 lb of force occasionally, and/or 25 to 50 lb of force frequently, and/or 10 to 20 lb of force constantly to move objects, physical demand requirements are in excess of those for medium work.
• Specific physical demands include, but are not limited to:

- Carrying: Occasional, up to 56 lbs., up to 25 feet
- Pushing: Occasional, up to 100 lbs., up to 150 feet
- Pulling: Occasional, up to 100 lbs., up to 150 feet
- Lifting - Floor to Knee, Knee to Waist, Waist to Shoulder: Occasional, up to 100 lbs.
- Lifting - Shoulder and Above: Occasional, up to 56 lbs.
- Balancing, Climbing, Crouching, Kneeling, Lying down, Reaching (below shoulder), Sitting: Occasional
- Stooping, Twisting, Bending, Reaching (shoulder or above), Standing: Frequent
