Summary/Objective

SSP America maintains a significant capital expenditure program, spending in excess of $60M per year in the design, construction, and remodeling of new and existing restaurants. The Cost Estimator position plays a vital role in this process by providing tender cost analysis and project budget management along with timely and accurate project and building construction cost estimates and other supporting cost and related financial data to senior management for use in making capital expenditure decisions. Travel will be required 25% of the time.

This position pays $110,000 - $140,000 per year with a bonus potential


Essential Functions

  • Provide conceptual project-based CapEx estimates for all projects and programs, starting with the initial RFP response, the Phase 1 budget submission to the Global Investment Committee (GIC) and continuing up until the budget is "locked” in the Phase 2 GIC review and approval process
  • Assist in the SSP budget management process and work with the SSP Project manager and CM to provide 30%, 60%, 95% budget updates throughout the design process on every project.
  • Assist in the analysis with the CM’s tendering process to check for scope inclusion, review of General Conditions, hourly rates and adherence with corporate audit procedures for capital project approval.
  • Liaise with the Design and procurement teams within SSP to assist with self-procurement models.
  • Work closely with SSP Design Manager (DM), the SSP Project Manager, other SSP Departments, and our Contractor(s) to generate and evaluate VE proposals for all systems and assemblies.
  • Provide support to the CM in the evaluation of Contractor Change Orders
  • Work closely with senior management in assisting with capital forecasting and reporting.
  • Maintain a comprehensive database of all budgeted and actual CapEx costs for all restaurants and other capital projects for all airports and other venues within the SSP America portfolio.
  • Adherence to the SSP America Attendance Policy
  • Liaise with the Group Capital team for compliance on various business strategies.
  • Performs any other duties as assigned by manager.

Required Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Minimum Ten (10) years in cost estimating, construction, purchasing or building engineering/design.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in engineering, architecture, accounting or related field. A Master’s degree in a related field is preferred.
  • Certified Cost Consultant (CCC), Quantity Surveyor (MRICs) or comparable certification is a plus.
  • Must have demonstrated experience in preparing construction costs estimates in the retail food industry.
  • Experience preparing estimates for small-scale food service or retail facilities in a physically secure environment is strongly preferred.
  • Possess extensive knowledge of commonly specified food service equipment and the electrical, mechanical and plumbing systems that support food service operations.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills and be able to interface effectively with all levels of management in the field and at the SSP America corporate offices, as well as the SSP Group parent company offices in the United Kingdom
  • Excellent communication (verbal and written), presentation, organization, time management, problem solving, and follow-up skills.
  • Proven ability to handle conflict, work under pressure/deal with high stress situations, and resolve uncomfortable situations with clients, customers, peers and do so while exercising sound judgement and decision making.
  • Dynamic, positive attitude with a service-oriented approach is essential to support our culture/work environment and foster positive working relationships with all team members of the organization.

Manager Responsibilities

This position reports directly to senior management and has the discretion to make decisions and/or recommendations on matters of financial significance to the organization. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, working independently and directing the work of others, preparing CapEx budgets and/or making recommendations of the same, providing financial input into high dollar value contract bids, and other responsibilities listed within this job description.

Position Type / Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work will vary, Wednesday through Tuesday. Primary hours are 8am-5pm in the time zone in which the position is based, or during hours mutually agreed upon with manager. However, the position will work with multiple sites across the United States and Canada, so flexibility to early morning and evening hours is expected to compensate for the change in time zones, or as job duties demand. Work on Holidays may also be required.

Work Environment

This job functions independently with little or no direct supervision in an office setting. If travel is required, job duties will be performed in an airport environment, both pre- and post-security, both within an office setting and in a restaurant environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers and multiple computer programs, social media, phones, smart phones, video conferencing and/or web conferencing, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.
