POSITION SUMMARY

Under the direction of the Branch Manager, the Cook is responsible for the commercial kitchen, use and care of kitchen equipment, and supervision of concession operations. The Cook prepares, cooks, and serves meals and snacks to club members in accordance with the guidelines of the Child & Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) while adhering to the mission of the Boys & Girls Clubs of South Puget Sound and The Kids @ Hope Philosophy. Promotes participation in the Healthy Habits program, ensures a safe and sanitary cafeteria environment, and maintains accurate food service records.

FUNCTION/TASKS

  • Plans, organizes, coordinates and operates Branch on-site kitchen; manages the preparation and serving of all food.
  • Coordinates and controls the serving of food; increases or decreases recipes and menus needed depending upon daily meal count.
  • Places orders for food items and supplies weekly with Branch Manager and authorized outside vendors; enters received items to maintain accurate inventory records.
  • Maintains safe and sanitary conditions, implements procedures and maintains standards for safe food storage, preparation, and service of food according to Health Department regulations.
  • Plans and supervises preparation of meals; ensures that food is served in the appropriate quantities and at required temperatures.
  • Provides adequate servings to ensure that each child receives correct portions to meet USDA Summer Meal Program requirements.
  • Performs daily, weekly and monthly deep cleaning of the facility, services area, and all kitchen equipment such as counters, tables, ovens, refrigerators, freezers, mixers, transient hot carts, mobile carts and rolling racks.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum of 18 years of age; High School diploma or GED required.
  • Must be able to comply with drug-free workplace policy.
  • Experience of federal and state laws, rules, regulations and policies governing youth nutrition services programs, i.e., Child & Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) guidelines.

Experience preferred but not required. CACFP training will be provided.

  • Basic arithmetic (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division); count money, manage budget.
  • Proficiency in preparing, producing, cooking, heating, baking and serving large quantities of a variety of foods.
  • Trained in the use and care of kitchen equipment and utensils; cleaning and sanitation; food storage.
  • Competent menu planning, food ordering, accurate inventory reporting using Excel/Word documents.
  • Supervision experience; ability to effectively communicate with youth, parents, staff, volunteers and community partners while displaying tact, maturity and flexibility.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, which may include evenings, weekends and/or holidays.
  • Mandatory CPR and First Aid Certifications – may be obtained on the job.
  • Must pass national criminal background check

Skills essential for successful communications include speaking and writing. Physical requirements include sight, hearing, being active and on your feet for a minimum of four hours; adapt to changes in a highly energetic work environment; other duties as assigned.

Environment of the position: both indoors and outdoors; possibility of adverse weather conditions; noise, dust, pollen and insects; including contact with the public. Possible contact with dissatisfied and/or abusive individuals.
