Kupu, a leading conservation and education nonprofit, is looking for individuals to take part in the upcoming Conservation Leadership Development Program. This full-time, paid opportunity, helps develop individuals looking for an intensive entry-level experience in preparation for a career in conservation. We have a 6 month and 11 month programs.

This year, Kupu has partnered with a variety of different sites throughout the State of Hawai‘i and the wider Pacific ,including Guam, American Samoa, and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (Saipan and Rota), to host participants. The sites include environmentally-orientated local non-profit organizations as well as federal and state agencies. Participants are matched with a single host site for the duration of the program, during which they will serve alongside conservation professionals to preserve American Samoa’s unique natural environment ensuring that it is maintained for future generations.

This upcoming cohort will be provided with a wide range of opportunities in many different disciplines relating to conservation. Our extensive network of partner sites offer exposure to the fields of ornithology, botany, natural resource management, aquatic resource management, biology, marine biology, cultural studies, zoology, agricultural science and more.

Participants will gain invaluable field experience, have the opportunity to build close relationships and network with conservation experts. While simultaneously, developing their own personal skills in the areas of leadership, organization, and decision-making. Those chosen to participate in the program will have the unique chance to serve in some of the world's most stunning natural locations and have the opportunity to leave a positive lasting impact on them and their community.

6 - MONTH PROGRAM DURATION (Half-Time Term) - Winter Start 2023

  • February 27, 2023 – July 29, 2023 (US Pacific Territories)

11 - MONTH PROGRAM DURATION (Full-Time Term) - Winter Start 2023

  • February 27, 2023 – December 30, 2023 (US Pacific Territories)

RESPONSIBILITIES

While tasks vary from site to site, participants can expect to serve one-on-one with a mentor/supervisor to gain a more in-depth understanding of their partner organization. Day to day operations may include fieldwork, lab work, research projects, presentations, outreach and leading volunteer groups.

Selected applicants can expect to begin immediately after the program start date from Monday through Friday, with the possibility of occasional weekends and evenings (site dependent). Due to the individual nature of the Conservation Leadership Development Program and the length of the service term, members are held to a high degree of personal responsibility.

BENEFITS

  • Earn a monthly living allowance (subject to taxes) up to $1,400 a month for American Samoa, Guam, Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands participants
  • Earn an Education Award (similar to a scholarship) towards higher education upon program completion: Half Time Term: $3,247.50, Full Time Term: $6,495.00
  • Opportunity for interest earned on certain educational loans (during the service term) to be paid for by AmeriCorps
  • Complete over 600 hours (Half Time Term) or 1700 hours (Full Time Term) of environmental community service
  • Receive an in-depth entry-level environmental experience from an agency that interests you
