General Overview:*
East Side House Settlement is a community resource in the South Bronx. The Community School Program Director will oversee Attendance Improvement for the Community School Program and create a high-performing partnership where students and families feel supported, community members, feel connected, and emerge in successful outcomes. Coordinated resources and programs must address key priorities such as attendance, behavior, academic, and family engagement. Resources to be coordinated are dependent on present school needs; academic; socio-emotional, health and others. Programmatically, resources may be designed to include options before, during after-school, during the school year, and summer months.

The role of Community School Director is complex. It requires a dynamic person who can effectively collaborate, negotiate, build relationships, strategically partner, mobilize, navigate, and interconnect multiple systems to succeed for kids and families. The CSD will execute the coordination and alignment of resources within a Community School to achieve the educational goals of students and families. The CSD is expected to work is partnership with others under the vision and direction of the school principal and agency mission.

The CSD will carry out the Leadership Team’s shared vision as well as the school requirements. This includes, but is not limited to, applying ESH’s competencies to planning and organizing learning opportunities, attendance interventions, and providing support for student/families within the school and community. Additionally, managing a data-driven incentive program, events to celebrate school accomplishments, and fostering an engaging and welcoming school culture for stakeholders.

Under the supervision of the Department Director of Community Schools with latitude for independent judgment, the CSD will be responsible for performing each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills and ability required, but not limited to:

Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Provide leadership and direction to full-time and part-time program staff assigned to Community Schools

  • Recruit, hire, orient, and develop program staff
  • Provide direct/indirect supervision of all program staff and delivery of services on a day-to-day basis, to ensure that all goals, targets, and performance outcomes are met on a daily/weekly/monthly basis
  • Generate reports on outcomes of the Community School efforts for various stakeholders
  • Collect, review, and analyze student data to develop new strategies and plan for continuous improvement and interventions
  • Meet regularly with the Department Director of Community Schools to communicate program strengths, enhancements, adjustments, challenges, and concerns that can affect productivity and effectiveness of the program.
  • Participate in organization comprehensive professional development, team meetings, and supervision
  • Collaborate with other departments (i.e., HR; Fiscal; IT; Facilities) to solve problems
  • Create and monitor all budgets associated with Community School support at the school level
  • Actively participate and facilitate core team meetings, share relevant data, highlight concerns, and develop solutions and serve as a thought partner with partners
  • Assist with the creation and establishment of an environment that responds to the needs of students and families while building a culture of high attendance and achievement
  • Coordinate services, programs, and resources surrounding social and emotional well-being and enrichment, for students with attendance and academic struggles
  • Provide social-emotional well-being and enrichment of resources, referrals, and program opportunities
  • Develop new partnerships with organizations and programs to work with the school
  • Manage organization/program partnership relationship
  • Organize workshops for students and their families on various topics, including social services, family services, enrichment opportunities, etc.
  • Build relationships with students, existing Community Based Organization (CBO) staff, and school staff
  • Develop strong relationships with teachers, parents, and students, primarily through existing groups such as the school leadership team (SLT) and grade levels
  • Connect students to a range of prevention, early intervention, and intensive service programs that address the physical, emotional, cognitive, and social development of each student
  • Engage families and caregivers in understanding and supporting the education of their youth
  • Engage and lead Crises intervention, small group counseling, and individual counseling
  • Implement, oversee and coordinate Peer Group Connection mediation program – including trainings, overnight retreat and weekly Advisory courses
  • Collaborate in agency/department-wide events and strategic planning efforts

Work Remotely:
Temporarily due to COVID-19. Subject to change based as public health conditions evolve.

Position Type and expected Hours of Work:
This is a full-time position. Monday – Friday 9:00 am – 5:00 pm, with flexibility and some Saturdays.
Workdays/hours subject to change based on ESH’s need as well as DOE school schedule.
Work Environment
Business casual. This job operates in a professional school environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines

Minimal travel is expected for this position (on a need basis).

Physical Demands
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. This would require the ability to lift files, open filing cabinets and bend or stand on a stool as necessary.

Education/ Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree required; Master’s Degree preferred.
  • Bi-lingual skills may be needed depending on needs of school.
  • Ability to work effectively with school aged youth, educators, families and communities from a wide range of cultural, social and economic backgrounds.
  • Experience working in school based settings (Middle and/or High School), with knowledge about tenants of community organizing, student support services, and youth development theories.
  • Ability to work collaboratively, with strong relationship building skills.
  • DOE fingerprinting and background clearances.
  • Some nights and weekends
