We are seeking a full-time Community News Editor to take the reins of a weekly community newspaper in Florence, Ore.

The Siuslaw News covers the communities of Florence, Mapleton, Dunes City, and upriver. We are committed to providing local news, and believe strong community newspapers lead the way. Our print and online content backs up our passion for local news.

The ideal candidate has the ability to focus on all aspects of community journalism, including taking photographs and writing news stories, and possesses an instinctual knack for digital journalism.

As an editor of the Siuslaw News, you can expect the following:

· Supervise and coordinate work of editorial department.

· Assign topics, events and stories to individual writers or reporters for coverage.

· Prepare, rewrite and edit copy to improve readability and correct errors in spelling, punctuation, and syntax — or supervise others who do this work.

· Report on certain events (government meetings, events, breaking news, etc.) and the effects of those in the community.

· Verify facts, dates, and statistics using standard reference sources.

· Create digital and print content.

· Plan the contents of publications according to style, editorial policy, and publishing requirements.

· Allocate print space for story text and photos according to space parameters and copy significance, using knowledge of layout principles.

· Oversee publication production, including weekly pagination of the Siuslaw News and Cottage Grove Sentinel, artwork, layout, and printing, ensuring adherence to deadlines. Knowledge of Adobe InDesign a must.

· Confer with other departments and management about each news edition.

The Editor must possess strong editorial judgment and demonstrate a passion for newsgathering and publishing without fear or favor.

The job is a salaried position and the work mainly occurs Monday-Friday; however, some work will happen during the weekends if there are events to be covered and some time on Sunday to begin the editorial process in preparation for a Monday at noon press deadline. Work hours are largely at the discretion of the Editor; maintaining excellent time management is a must.

A successful candidate will hold a degree in journalism or related field. Preference may be given depending on the amount of writing and reporting experience. Knowledge of AP style must be up-to-date.

Starting Salary is $40,000. 401k, Health, Vision and Dental insurance are offered.

Pay: $34,000.00 - $40,000.00 per year
