We are looking for Part-Time/ Temporary Community Health Workers to join the UTHealth School of Public Health in Houston, TX. This position supports a COVID-19 research project at the Center for Health Promotion and Prevention Research. In this position, you will provide research study-specific intervention delivery in pre-determined areas in Harris County. You will provide education about COVID-19 testing to community members, administer surveys, and collect data electronically and on paper.

Position Summary:

The Community Health Worker I is a position on a 2-year Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) grant. This project aims to increase COVID-19 vaccination uptake in Texas. Under the supervision of the Principal Investigator, Co-Investigator, Program Manager, and Community Health Worker Supervisor, the Community Health Worker I will effectively provide community members with resources about the COVID-19 vaccine in high priority areas in Houston and Harris County. The HRSA project is projected to end October 31, 2023. Employment is not guaranteed past this date.


Position Key Accountabilities:

  • Establishes and maintains rapport with investigators, research staff, and community members.
  • Engages in community outreach and education efforts in Houston and all of Harris County, as determined by research team.
  • Helps community members utilize resources in their area and assist with navigation to vaccine opportunities.
  • Educates community members about vaccine FAQs, covid protection, misinformation and other topics related to COVID-19.
  • Documents all encounters with community members using project-specific data collection forms. Completes documentation in a timely manner.
  • Maintains a comprehensive understanding of community needs, resources, services and programs available to advocate for community member needs and requests.
  • Continuously expands knowledge for professional growth and development to meet requirements to maintain State certification and skills competency that supports project goals.
  • May assist in the planning and/or facilitating of group education intervention with community members.
  • Maintains confidentiality per HIPAA guidelines in regards to patient information. Adheres to all policies, procedures and standards within the organization.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Certification/Skills:

  • Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) – Certified CHW
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred
  • Must have ability to perform complex and diverse administrative duties that involve application of procedures and demonstrate appropriate judgment within the CHW scope of work.
Preferred:
  • Possess a valid Texas drivers license and functioning vehicle for travel throughout Harris County.

Minimum Education:

  • High school diploma or GED.

Minimum Experience:

  • One (1) year of relevant work experience in health, social worker or education. May substitute required experience with equivalent years of education beyond the minimum education requirement.

Physical Requirements:Exerts up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds frequently and/or a negligible amount constantly to move objects.Security Sensitive:This job class may contain positions that are security sensitive and thereby subject to the provisions of Texas Education Code § 51.215Residency Requirement:Employees must permanently reside and work in the State of Texas.
