About the Opportunity

This is an open position with West Penn Power, a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp, in the State College Service Center.


JOB SUMMARY:


Collectors perform a variety of duties in accordance with the Company's customer service standards to encourage the collection of delinquent accounts. Duties require field contacts at individual customer locations. Daily assignments are prepared in an electronic format (handheld computer), and paper documents for the explicit purpose of addressing delinquent residential and commercial accounts. Primary activities involve terminating accounts for nonpayment at the meter if satisfactory payment is not received/verified. The collector may perform reconnection of the meter once the payment is received/verified.


The candidate may be required to use their personal transportation in the performance of their duties and therefore must maintain a valid driver’s license, appropriate vehicle insurance and vehicle in sufficient operating condition commensurate with local driving conditions including, but not limited to, uneven terrain, dirt roads, hills and inclement icy/snowy/muddy/wet surfaces.


Collectors participate in emergency work as required and perform the tasks of lower job classifications including meter reading as needed. Emergency work assignments may include work locations of other Operating Companies.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:


The following minimum qualifications must be met in order to obtain and retain this classification:


  • Education and Experience: Meter reading experience, extensive knowledge of the Operating Company’s service areas, and knowledge of basic electricity.

  • Safety: Ability to work safely and follow applicable safety rules relative to work assignments.

  • Physical: Manual dexterity to operate handheld devices and accurately input information, ability to do considerable walking or driving, ascend and descend steps and ladders, work in all weather conditions and to navigate across rough terrain. Ability to lift and carry more than 25 pounds and possess range of motion commensurate with installation and/or removal of meters.

  • Mental: Ability to read and report meter conditions and data accurately, read and take appropriate action based upon reports and work orders, deal with customers, potentially dangerous animals, and the public in a professional and courteous manner, work with energized meters and the ability to deal with potentially dangerous animals. The Company will provide successful applicants the necessary training to work with energized meters. Prior to such training, and for the first six months thereafter, the ability to work with energized meters will not be used to disqualify an applicant for this job.

  • Clerical: Ability to communicate effectively and operate two-way radios, telephones, cellular phones, and other communication devices and write legibly and maintain accurate records and reports. Ability to handle and safeguard cash and execute cash transactions as permitted or required by State commission guidelines.

  • Work Characteristics: Meet Company standards in regards to physical fitness, personal conduct and appearance, attendance, work performance, and safety practices, and supervision required.

  • Special: Possess a valid motor vehicle operator’s license for the applicable jurisdiction and be able to safely operate motor vehicles.

  • Employee must meet the residency requirements, where applicable.
