POSITION SUMMARY: A Clinical Specialist works in a blended role with client populations during the admission process and treatment course. Completes drug and alcohol assessments and full spectrum of intake and treatment planning processes. Facilitates psychoeducational, experiential, and holistic therapy groups. Works closely with primary clinicians and the clinical supervisor to assure that the client treatment experience is effectively delivered. Works with primary clinicians and client populations to assure that progress is being made toward treatment goals and objectives. Assists primary clinicians in documentation of progress and day to day events in client charts, as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS: Knowledge of addiction, clinical assessment methods, individual and group therapy techniques, as well as knowledge of outpatient treatment programs and dynamics is required. Good facilitation skills, and the ability to participate as an effective team member required. Understanding of human behavior within the process required to facilitate change. Excellent writing skills as well as the ability to produce comprehensive documentation. Must have excellent skills in verbal communication, good organization, and time management skills, as well as familiarity with, and competency in, using personal computer applications. The ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all staff, clients, outside agencies, families, visitors, and the community is required.

EDUCATION AND TRAINING: A person who does not meet the educational and experiential qualifications for the position of counselor may be employed as a counselor assistant if the requirements of at least 1 of the following paragraphs are met. However, a project may not hire more than 1 counselor assistant for each employee who meets the requirements of clinical supervisor or counselor or lead counselor.  The counselor that does not meet the experiential qualifications for the position of counselor shall be given a written performance evaluation at 3 months from hire based upon measurable performance standards. Assignment of a caseload shall be contingent upon the supervisor’s positive assessment of the counselor’s individual skill level. If the counselor does not meet standards at the 3-month evaluation, the supervision requirement will remain in place until the standards are met.  If a counselor assistant's degree is not in a human service area, then the individual must proceed pursuant to § 704.10(c)(5).
