Captain

JOB SUMMARY:

Reports to the Chief of Security/Major. Assists the Chief of Security/Major supervising the shift Lieutenants and directly supervises the officers assigned to the Transport Department. Responsible for the custody, discipline and transfer of inmates in facility in compliance with LaSalle Correction and Jail Standards established by the Texas Commission on Jail Standards.

JOB DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Supervise, protect, instruct, train, counsel and evaluate assigned employees and inmates; assist in formulating security and work procedure.
• Supervise the scheduling of daily transports for the facility and supervise the scheduling of employees' work and off-duty time.
• Responsible for the transfer of inmates from one agency to another.
• Responsible for coordinating the inmate grievance program.
• Assist the Chief of Security with coordinating the inmate disciplinary system.
• Supervise and direct searches for contraband and provide security.
• Supervise and provide custody and security of inmates including observation of inmates.
• Read, review and properly apply information found in inmate records which is related to the inmates’ health and safety and to the security of the facility. Provide appropriate information to other personnel.
• Supervise the preparation and maintenance of records, forms and reports.
• Coordinate specific duties with Intake and the Classification Department.
• Ensure all DOT rules and regulations are met and compliance documented; cooperate with ACA Coordinator to ensure full DOT compliance.
• Promote the development of positive social skills through modeling appropriate behaviors and intervening when inappropriate behaviors are observed. Provide regular feedback to staff regarding social skills procedures and intervention techniques.
• Maintain accountability of staff, inmates and property; adhere to safety practices.
• It is expected that the incumbent shall perform other duties as assigned within his/her capabilities as determined by management.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• TCOLE certification as a county jailer.
• Three years of correctional custody/law enforcement experience required, one of which must be in a supervisory capacity.
• Valid driver's license in the State of Texas.
