Job Description

Virginia Western Community College is a two-year public institution of higher education operating under the Virginia Community College System, a statewide system of community colleges. The College operates under the policies established by the State Board for Community Colleges and the Virginia Western Community College Local Advisory Board.
Virginia Western is located on a 70-acre campus in southwest Roanoke, VA. The service region of the College includes Roanoke, Salem, Roanoke County, Craig County, Franklin County, and southern Botetourt County. The College was established in 1966 and has grown from an initial enrollment of 1,352 to its current annual enrollment of over 9,000 students in credit courses and more than 1,400 enrollments in fast-track workforce and continuing education courses.
Provides protection of persons and property for the college campus and adjacent or surrounding streets and properties. Services include response for law enforcement, first aid, and fire protection; provided with professionalism and courtesy. Works with the campus and surrounding community to educate students, staff and faculty to foster a safe and secure learning environment. Provides law enforcement and services by patrol of campus property daily on foot and in vehicle, enforce college policies and regulations and to create an environment of safety and security for all persons and property. Secures all buildings on campus as needed. Checks buildings, for problems and reports such discoveries to the appropriate on-call personal.
Provides information, directions, and assistance to the campus and surrounding community. Promotes compliance with college parking and traffic regulations. Directs and controls traffic, conducts investigations of vehicular accidents, thefts, first aid events and other incidents as necessary. Transports funds to and from area bank, checks and reports campus conditions during times of inclement weather.

Special Assignments

May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.



KSA's/Required Qualifications
Considerable knowledge of public safety and security laws, legal codes, as well as regulations and equipment, to ensure effective safeguarding and security of people, buildings, and property of Virginia Western Community College. Ability to follow oral and written instructions and procedures. Ability to write, proofread, and edit written reports. Ability to react appropriately in emergency situations. Ability to work all shifts and carrying equipment and performing foot and vehicle patrols. Must possess or be able to obtain Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) law enforcement academy certification and a valid Virginia driver’s license. A current valid driver’s license is required. A minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent is required. Applicants must be available to work a flexible 12-hour work schedule, including evening hours, weekends, holidays, and rotating shifts.

Preferred Qualifications
Previous work experience working in a college, military and/or municipal police environment. Current valid Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) law enforcement academy certification is preferred. Honorable prior military service is preferred. Current valid Virginia driver’s license is preferred.
