Credentials:

  • Class B CDL
  • State Inspection Certificate
  • Maintain Current ASE Certification

Education:

  • High School, GED, or equivalent
  • Vocational experience or other experience in auto/diesel mechanics is required in lieu of high school diploma

Training/Experience Required:

  • Four to Five years in auto and diesel mechanics
  • Some training can substitute for actual experience

Special Skills, Knowledge, Abilities

  • Must have knowledge of both gas and diesel equipment, transmissions, front end, brakes, drive line, electrical and welding, brazing, drum lathe, shop presses, test equipment, air tools, jacks, dollies, bandsaw, and automotive equipment and tools.
  • Must be in control of parts, fuel records, and preventive maintenance schedules

Communication Skills

  • Basic communication skills to exchange information, give/receive simple instructions, and respond to inquiries.
  • Includes filling out forms (both paper and electronically)

Mathematical Skills

  • Performs routine computations requiring a knowledge of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division using whole numbers, fractions, decimals, and/or percentages.

Reading and Interpreting

  • Reads and interprets routine written or printed materials such as basic schematics, manuals, charts, diagrams, maps, or instruction materials.

Tools and Equipment Usage:

  • Uses tools or equipment with expertise acquired through extensive experience and/or specialized training. The most complicated equipment necessary to perform satisfactory include: refrigerant recovery systems, rotor drum lathe; sun machine; electrical system/tune up testing machines; alternator tester; shop press.
  • Must be on call 24 hours per day, trouble shoot, and make any necessary repairs to vehicles in the field. There are over 54 vehicles in fleet.

Job Goal:
Performs skilled/full journey level duties under general supervision to repair or maintain school bus fleet and to maintain other fleet vehicles. An incumbent in this position will follow generally standardized operating policies and procedures.

Contact with Others: An incumbent in this position has regular contact with members of own staff or district. Interpersonal interaction or communication is required with district employees.

Other Performance Measures: Successful performance of the job requires good customer service/people skills to work with drivers of buses and vehicles and to ascertain problems. It requires following safety guidelines and policies to reduce accident or injury. It requires following school dress standards, proper attendance or leave policies, and other work-habits concerns. Some initiative, self discipline and effective problem solving are necessary to diagnose problems and to anticipate potential concerns. Must be able to cooperate with other staff members and have a positive attitude towards staff, students, and the public to enhance educational goals.

Responsibilities:

  • Collects bus and vehicle inspection reports. Performs necessary bus and vehicle repairs as indicated by bus drivers and other drivers. Diagnoses problems, test drives equipment before and after repair to ensure proper working order.
  • Performs daily and periodic preventive maintenance, fluid levels, brakes, tire condition, tun ups, lubes, etc. to buses, tractors, and maintenance vehicles. Performs minor repairs to lights, switches, flat tires, etc.
  • Performs overhaul to motors, transmissions, front end, braks, drive line, electrical and charging system, clutches, etc.
  • Performs inspections to vehicles. Safety inspects all buses and vehicles.
  • Completes invoices/equipment requisitions; Maintains supply of vehicle/bus parts; orders parts, oil, lubricants, etc. Performs necessary inventory of equipment, tools, parts/supplies, fuel, etc. Maintains necessary records of service to vehicle/buses. Ensures that buses and vehicles are properly accounted for daily.
  • Maintains a clean service center, parking lot, and front office; maintains tools and parts in a safe and clean manner.
  • May assist teachers/students with starting vehicles, getting into locked vehicles, repairing flats, and minor equipment problems as required.
  • Must be on call to assist drivers on activity trips.
  • Performs on site troubleshooting and repair of buses or other vehicles. Available “on call” as needed anytime bus failure occurs.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Supervision exercised: Employee does not provide direct supervision over staff. May provide indirect supervision over other employees on a particular project.

Physical/Mental Requirements:

  • In a work day, the employee must stand/walk 6-8 hours per day. Employee’s job requires frequent to continuous bending/stooping, squatting/crouching,crawling/kneeling; frequent climbing (height 13 feet), and frequent reaching above the shoulders; frequent pushing/pulling.
  • Employee’s job requires frequent carrying/lifting of up to 75 pounds and occasional lifting over 75 pounds in order to transport parts/tools, transmission, gear boxes, heads, manifolds, brake drums, disk brake rotors, axles, flywheels, tires, batteries, etc. On occasion must be able to repair and transport flat/spare tires weighing up to 130 pounds.
  • Job requires employee to use both feet for repetitive movements as in operating foot controls. Job requires employee to use both hands for such repetitive actions requiring simple/firm grasping and/or fine manipulation/fine adjustments.
  • Employee must possess manual dexterity/visual ability sufficient to work in, around, and under vehicles safely and efficiently and to read and complete necessary reports, order parts, etc.; possess hearing/speaking ability to communicate with workers, hear engine noises to diagnose problems and to avoid danger.
  • Employee’s job requires working on unprotected heights; Use of/close to power tools (drums/lathes), equipment and machinery while engine is running; working in the outdoors with temperature changes; driving motorized equipment; exposure to toxic gas, dust, exhaust fumes, gases, battery acids, etc.
