Job Purpose*: A paraprofessional who provides basic breastfeeding education and encouragement to WIC Peer Counselor Program (PCP) participants by providing individual and group breastfeeding education, phone calls and texts, WIC clinic visits and maintaining records. Provide breastfeeding counseling and education to low-risk WIC participants. Participate in breastfeeding promotion and community outreach activities. Provides participants with referrals to other programs. Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Knowledge of basic nutrition & breastfeeding assessment/counseling.
  • Promotes breastfeeding as the preferred method of infant feeding.
  • Attends monthly meetings and trainings for WIC breastfeeding peer counselors.
  • Recruits pregnant women who intend to breastfeed and would like to have PC support. Maintain a determined caseload of PC participants.
  • Receives all incoming telephone calls for the Nutrition/WIC Department; routes calls to appropriate staff or takes an accurate message.
  • Courteously greets clients and immediately notifies appropriate staff.
  • Answers basic questions of callers or visitors regarding the WIC/Nutrition program, and services as SCIHP, if possible. Issues WIC vouchers to participants according to the established procedure.
  • Schedules appropriate WIC appointments with the Registered Dietitian, WNA or Peer Counselor
  • Possess current CPR certification.
  • MUST PROVIDE PROOF OF COMPLETED COVID VACCINATIONS.

Must be sensitive to the needs of Native Americans and knowledgeable of their culture, traditions (beliefs and practices), history, and community.
