The first new department approved as part of SDSS is the Oceans Department. The oceans are earth’s last frontier and are vital for our health and future. The Oceans Department will support the critical activities needed for breakthrough ocean teaching and research, and use inspired research to fundamental discovery and impact, including broad interdisciplinary and system-based approaches to addressing global ocean challenges. Our mission and vision will be amplified by strong and durable linkages to other existing and emerging units in the new school and across campus.


A critical and major component of Stanford Oceans is Hopkins Marine Station (HMS) located in Monterey Bay in Pacific Grove, California. HMS has over a 130 year-long tradition as a renowned marine biological station with over 15 faculty, 15 staff and 40 graduate students on site.



The Department is seeking a Boating and Diving Safety Officer with an extensive experience in marine operations including support of marine scientific techniques, boating and diving operations and field safety training. This role serves as the subject matter expert in boating and diving safety for HMS. This role supports field research and related programs by managing Hopkins Marine Station boating and diving activities. This role also, develops, implements, and monitors boating and diving safety programs to ensure compliance with federal and state regulations, nationally recognized guidelines, and Stanford policy.


25% Diving Support


Responsible for oversight of the Stanford University Scientific Diving Program that includes operation & usage of diving equipment and dive lockers, as well as tasks not limited to the following:


  • Coordinate use of HMS diving facilities with visiting diving groups.
  • Develops & implements scientific diving guidelines, operations, equipment, and procedures.
  • Works closely with faculty, students, and staff to safely facilitate and monitor their diving work, on and from vessels for research, education, and academic support operations.
  • Makes technical decisions on when major repairs, upgrades, replacement, and specialized fabrication are needed.
  • Operates, services, maintains, and repairs diving equipment. (i.e. oxygen tanks, first aid kits, dive lockers)
  • Ensure diving operations are current with community best practices.
  • Provides demonstration including diving, training, technical advice, and support as needed.
  • Dive with faculty, students, and staff as needed (usually one or twice a week)
  • Ensures operations, policies and procedures are conducted according to federal, state and Stanford regulations.
  • Train and certify scientific divers according to Stanford and the American Academy of Underwater Sciences (AAUS) research diving safety standards
  • Correspond with Diving Safety Officers at other facilities to permit diving reciprocity as needed
  • Maintain database of existing scientific divers (i.e. logs and paperwork)
  • Compile and submit annual report for scientific diving data to AAUS

25% Boating Support


Responsible for daily operations of Hopkins boating activities that includes oversight of the boatyard area, as well as tasks not limited to the following:

  • Works closely with faculty, students, and staff to safely facilitate their scientific & educational activities in, on and from marine vessels.
  • Makes technical decisions on when major repairs, upgrades, replacement, and specialized fabrication are needed.
  • Operates, services, maintains, and repairs Stanford owned marine equipment and supplies (boats, trailers, flares, buoy's, life vests, fire extinguishers etc.)
  • Provides training, technical advice, and support as needed.
  • Ensures operations, policies and procedures are conducted according to federal, state and Stanford regulations.
  • Organize and perform equipment checkouts
  • Train and certify eligible candidates to operate HMS vessels according to Hopkins and Scientific Boating and Safety Association (SBSA) safety standards.

30% Other Facilities & Administrative Support


Supports SDSS & Hopkins facilities & administrative team in matters relating to facility maintenance & administration such as:

  • Coordinate access through HMS property for use of shoreline by visiting researchers.
  • Review applications for all types of refuge usage and work with refuge committee as needed
  • Maintain diving & boating program manuals & website information

20% Health & Safety & Training


Supports the SDSS & HMS health & safety team in matters relating to safety such as:

  • Conducts inspection of vessels, trailers and safety equipment as required.
  • Inspects, investigates incidents and complaints, and recommends corrective action as needed.
  • May participate as a member of the incident response team.
  • Provides support to campus disaster preparedness activities, responds to hazardous materials releases, and serves in the appropriate response role based on training and expertise.
  • Teach CPR/First Aid/AED/Emergency Oxygen Administration to Stanford scientific divers and trainee divers.

To be successful in this position, you will need:

  • Bachelor's degree and three years related, demonstrated boating/diving experience, or a combination of education and relevant experience

In addition, our preferred requirements include:

  • Analytical skills to analyze and track complex space, and equipment.
  • Interpersonal skills, mature judgment required to interact effectively with a broad range of people, including faculty, students, and vendors.
  • Ability to coordinate and manage multiple projects with competing priorities, meet deadlines and project plans with short- and long-term end dates.
  • Working knowledge of applications such as Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Project.
  • Experience working with internal and external vendors and services contracting.
  • Background knowledge of safe handling and disposal of chemicals and hazardous waste; emergency preparedness plans and their implementation.
  • Significant experience overseeing vessel, diving, and safety operations in a professional capacity.
  • Working knowledge of principles, practices, and techniques in the field of vessel operations, scientific diving, and ocean safety as demonstrated by broad knowledge of the full range of pertinent standard and evolving concepts, principles, and methodologies
  • Working knowledge and understanding of applicable federal and state laws, rules, regulations, and theories and systems associated with boat operations, scientific diving, and ocean safety
  • Significant experience evaluating, testing, maintaining, and repairing scuba equipment, vessel parts, boating trailers, and general machinery, as well as other related diving and boating equipment
  • General knowledge of USCG and California State (DMV and boating) regulations as they apply to boat and trailer operation, registration, and safety equipment
  • Skills in operation and maintenance of boats (inboard and outboard powered craft).
  • Experience and ability to drive and successfully maneuver large pick-up trucks, boat trailers and boats up to 25’ long and up to 10,000lbs in weight
  • Ability to dive and carry out supervision in the water of our research programs with faculty, students, and staff.
  • Ability to operate

Certifications and Licenses:

  • Must possess a valid license to drive in the State of California.
  • Current scuba instructor with nationally recognized training agency, or ability to obtain and maintain
  • Current DAN (Divers Alert Network) Diving First Aid for Professional Divers instructor, or ability to obtain and maintain
  • AAUS certified scientific diver, or ability to obtain and maintain.
  • CA Safe Boating certification, or ability to obtain and maintain.
  • MOTC/MOCC Instructor certification, or ability to obtain and maintain
  • Certified Scuba diving repair technician, preferred

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Requires 24-hour response availability seven days per week for emergency situations.
  • May be exposed to noise > 80dB TWA.
  • May be working at heights 4 - 10 ft.
  • May need to drive at night

  • Frequently, kneel/crawl, grasp forcefully, sort/file paperwork or parts, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh >70 pounds.
