Sunshine Enterprises’ mission is to empower high-potential entrepreneurs living in under-resourced neighborhoods to grow their businesses and transform their communities.

Sunshine Enterprises’ vision is to establish 5 neighborhood-based business hubs catalyzing free enterprise in Chicago’s under-resourced neighborhoods. Currently, we serve hundreds of unique entrepreneurs throughout the Chicago area in three main business hubs servicing neighborhoods such as Woodlawn, Englewood, West Evanston, Rogers Park and North Lawndale. Each of these hubs has been strategically placed in under-resourced areas suffering from a lack of jobs, marketplace resources, and growth opportunities. These hubs provide an economic stimulus to the communities by supporting local entrepreneurs. SE also has developed hubs focused on construction trades, arts and makers, and tech and digital industries, as well as Spanish-language programming.


Position Summary

Sunshine Enterprises has 3 core programs: the Community Business Academy (CBA); Business Acceleration Services (BAS); and Credit to Capital (C2C). The CBA is a twelve-session, 36-hour interactive course in business basics. The core of the BAS program is business coaching, workshops, and mentoring. C2C provides services along a continuum from personal credit to business credit to accessing capital for their business.


Sunshine Enterprises is looking for a bilingual coach who will provide general business coaching as well as personal financial & credit coaching as a financial coach. General business coach: Within the BAS program, the general business coach will provide business coaching to assigned CBA graduates.


Financial coach: Within the C2C program, the bilingual financial coach will provide Spanish-language services to help improve personal and financial stability and develop a pipeline of clients ready to access capital. Financial counseling and coaching will involve an ability to engage and motivate clients, a strong understanding of personal finances, and the ability to teach that knowledge to others. The financial coach is responsible for assisting clients in developing plans of action intended to help the client reach their goals and achieve financial stability.

The financial coach is expected to focus services in a one-on-one counseling format. However, the coach might also conduct classes and workshops on topics such as budgeting and credit building, particularly as part of week 3 of the CBA. The financial coach will also work with our CBA, BAS and C2C teams to ensure that clients are getting the assistance they need.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The duties include but are not limited to the following:


  • Provide 60-minute coaching session as lead coach with those assigned out of our CBA graduates.
  • Provide 60-minute coaching and technical assistance coaching session with additional participants referred by Sunshine Enterprises.
  • Assist the clients with strategies and tactics to achieve goal-orientated outcomes to help support the growth or launch of the client’s business, in person, through the phone or an online platform.
  • Coaching clients within a specified timeframe to achieve identified goals within coaching program.
  • Connect clients to partners for access to capital, legal services, and other business growth opportunities.
  • Submit coaching forms within the allotted time frame.
  • Participate in discussions regarding individual or group coaching.

Provide one on one financial counseling/coaching

  • Teach clients about the value of their services and engage the client in a long-term relationship
  • Assist clients in resolving current financial situations, while providing a wide lens on their financial health to shift the approach to proactive financial management
  • Work with clients to complete a very detailed financial assessment
    • Work with the client to document a budget and provide strategies for budget improvements
    • Access the clients credit report/score and provide strategies for credit building


  • Develop plans of actions and provide tools, resources, and accountability to the client to help them meet their goals
  • Assist clients in establishing and improving both personal and business credit
  • Understand other services offered by SE (such as coaching, mentoring and workshops) and partner organizations (such as employment services and business financials training) and connect clients to these other services
  • Develop a pipeline of entrepreneurs with improved personal credit ready to access capital for their business

Outcome tracking—track the activity, stories and successes of program participants

    • Use SE’s coaching log to document coaching sessions and track outcomes of their clients accurately and in a timely manner

Presenting at Community Business Academy cohorts to educate and recruit

    • Present at Week 3 of Community Business Academy cohorts across all multiple cohorts per semester
    • Present on wealth building, personal budget, and credit improvement strategies
    • Recruit participants for Credit to Capital Program
    • Follow up with participants to enroll in Credit to Capital Program

Conduct additional workshops as a means of outreach and education

      • Develop workshop materials or tailor existing materials to meet the needs of the Spanish-language SE alumni community


Required Skills and Abilities

  • A strong understanding of personal finances, particularly in the areas of budgeting, asset building, and credit building
  • A strong understanding of the role of personal and business credit in starting and growing a successful business
  • Track record of successfully supporting clients in improving credit and financial stability
  • Ability to develop or modify workshop materials
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Internet and Resource Savvy
  • Strong communication skills, both written and oral
  • Strong problem-solving skills
  • Strong emotional intelligence and cross-cultural competency.
  • Experience with group and / or individual coaching.
  • Interest in making a lasting impact on the lives of entrepreneurs
  • Strong desire to help entrepreneurs that can be representative of marginalized, low to moderate income, and at-risk populations become economically self-sufficient

Minimum Education and Experience

To perform this role successfully, an individual must have the following education, licensure and/or experience:

    • Bilingual in English and Spanish is required
    • A bachelor’s degree from a four-year accredited institution
    • Experience running a comparable credit building program at another organization preferred
    • Previous work experience with entrepreneurs from disinvested communities, and/or the ability to provide financial counseling/coaching services in a culturally sensitive manner.
    • Ability to relate well to team members and clients
    • Previous work experience in the financial sector (banking, lending, insurance, investments) is preferred
  • 5 plus years’ experience as a small business owner or as a coach to small businesses.
  • Coaching certification a plus, but not required.
  • Knowledge and relationships of the small business resources offered in city of Chicago.
  • Demonstrated strength in several of the core competencies for small business including but not limited to marketing, planning, food industry, product development and manufacturing & distribution.
