Summary

The Associate Travel Managing Editor will manage all aspects of the production of 20-30 Moon Travel guidebooks per year. The production process starts when the manuscript is accepted and continues through the publication of the finished book, and the managing editor will be responsible for the technical quality (spelling, grammar, style, consistency, design specs, etc.) of the entire book, as well as adhere to strict and aggressive schedules and budgets. We would prefer that the candidate can work out of our Berkeley, CA office, and we are open to remote candidates too.


Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Adhere to production schedule based on manuscript delivery date and on-sale date.
  • Manage copyediting of manuscripts and ensure the quality of the edit.
  • Coordinate with authors and acquisitions editors to meet schedules and maintain quality information.
  • Coordinate with cartographers and graphics coordinators, when necessary, to make sure that graphic elements are ready for production.
  • Mark up the manuscript with placement of elements, including callouts/sidebars and maps.
  • Prepare and send manuscripts for design/layout.
  • Manage page proofs, coordinating with the book team, and ensure the aesthetic and technical quality of the page proofs.
  • Collate and enter page corrections.
  • Make sure that the index is created and ensure the quality of the index.
  • Review printer proofs.
  • Keep Acquisitions department and book team apprised on progress of production through regular meetings.
  • Adhere to budgets.
  • Enter and maintain all book specifications and data for all formats in publisher systems.
  • Contract with freelance copy editors, proofreaders, and indexers for editorial freelance pool.
  • Other duties as needed.

Knowledge, Skills, and Experience

  • Thrives in a deadline-driven environment, with a strong track record of delivering projects on schedule.
  • Strong project management, organizational, and communication skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong editing and proofreading skills.
  • Professional command of grammar, spelling, and style rules.
  • High proficiency with Mac and PC platforms, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook), Adobe Creative Cloud Suite.
  • Flexibility and a positive attitude.
  • 3 years of project editing or related experience preferred.

The compensation range for this position is $45,000 to $50,000. Salary can vary based on a number of factors including skills, experience, and location — talk with your recruiter to learn more. There may be times that you will be required (or requested) to work overtime due to the nature of your role or exceptional workload issues or special projects.
