JOB DESCRIPTION

ASSOCIATE TEACHER
(EXPANDED LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES PROGRAM)

  • The Expanded Learning Opportunities Program (ELO-P) provides a transitional kindergarten (TK), full-day program in partnership with CDR and the Hueneme Elementary School District. Current funding through June 30, 2024; however, it is expected to continue well beyond that date. Work schedule 10:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. (35 hours per week).

Under the supervision of the assigned site supervisor, the Expanded Learning Opportunities Program (ELO-P) associate teacher shall be responsible to:

1. Pick up students from the assigned school district classroom and walk them over to their respective Child Development Resources/Head Start classroom.

2. Follow required policies and procedures to implement educational objectives and program standards.

3. Carry out the goals by providing a program that promotes a play-based curriculum, values hands-on learning, and incorporates the interests and talents of enrolled children.

4. Plan, prepare and implement weekly lesson plans that provide open-ended and project-based activities for different levels of development and multicultural diversity of children enrolled.

5. Effectively supervise children at all times.

6. Maintain an ordered arrangement, appearance, decor, and learning environment of the classroom in cooperation with other staff and make suggestions to the site supervisor regarding instructional materials and equipment necessary to carry out the program.

7. Perform daily health observations and maintain attendance records.

8. Attend center staff meetings and in-service training as required

9. Contribute to a healthy and successful nutrition program by eating center prepared meals/snacks with the children.

10. Perform other duties as assigned.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

Required Education and Experience:

  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • Minimum of 12 completed units in child development/ECE; ( must include child/human growth

& development and child/family & community) AND a state awarded child development associate teacher permit or higher.

  • Minimum of three (3) months of verifiable paid or volunteer work experience working with young children.

Preferred Criteria: Ability to effectively speak and read English/Spanish, English/Vietnamese or
English/Chinese. Associate degree or higher in child development/ECE or *related field may substitute for the required permit. * A degree in a related field must include the following courses: child/human growth & development and child/family & community. Related fields are defined as: Liberal arts, psychology, sociology, home economics, nutrition, special education, general education, human development, or health education, and with coursework equivalent to a major in early childhood education.

Knowledge and Abilities: Requires ability to speak, read and write English fluently. Sensitivity to needs of low-income population and to multicultural beliefs and practices. Ability to work with and maintain effective communication with high-risk families. Ability to maintain strict confidentiality. Flexibility and ability to work as a team member.

Physical Abilities: Ability to see at normal distance and hear normal conversations and sounds. Physical ability to use hands and fingers, bend, squat, sit on floor, skip, run, and climb stairs, as part of daily center activities. Ability to safely lift or assist children weighing up to 40 pounds in emergency situations only.

License or Other Requirements. Must submit to a job-pertinent, pre-employment agency-paid physical examination, negative tuberculosis test and criminal record background checks. Must hold Infant First Aid and CPR certificate and renew upon every expiration. Employment is conditional pending satisfactory results of all required tests and background checks. Periodic physical examinations and TB clearances will be required if hired. Possession of a valid California driver’s license and automobile with appropriate insurance coverage is preferred but may be required depending on the needs of the department at the time of hire. Mandated reporter.

Pay: $17.38 - $22.62 per hour
