Associate/Senior Associate
THE POSITION:
Kearns & West seeks an Associate/Senior Associate to provide stakeholder engagement, conflict resolution, and project management services to our New York government clients in the energy sector.
This role will be responsible for planning, implementing, and reporting on meaningful community and labor engagement for a public-private clean energy infrastructure collaboration seeking federal funding for market development across the northeast region. The Associate/Senior Associate will advance successful coordination of clean energy industry partners to meet and exceed federal requirements by developing community and labor engagement toolkits, conducting social characterization and stakeholder assessments, supporting project partners in the development of workforce and community agreements with targeted stakeholder groups, and review of each project’s Community Benefits Plan for compliance with selection criteria, including Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, federal Justice40, New York State Climate Act, and other disadvantaged community benefits requirements.
The successful candidate is a distinguished written and verbal communicator, thrives in fast-paced client environments, and has experience managing complex projects with multiple workstreams. Candidates from a variety of backgrounds, including dispute resolution, public policy, and communications will be considered. Interest in collaborative problem-solving and process planning/coordination is essential. Familiarity with New York and regional clean energy stakeholders is a significant plus.

Key responsibilities include the following:
  • Research and development for stakeholder engagement technical support resources, including meaningful community and labor engagement toolkits for clean energy project developers
  • Support the drafting of collaborative-wide and project-specific Community Benefits Plans, the review of plans for compliance with federal and state requirements for meaningful community and labor engagement, and progress reporting
  • Digital engagement, including the planning and managing of virtual engagement activities. Develop and support delivery of digital labor and community meetings, including notetaking, report preparation, and database management
  • Preparation of informational materials for stakeholders and the public, including development of a brochure, website, and experiential educational programming
  • Project management, contract administration, and invoice preparation. Tracking project activities and deadlines and facilitation of small group project management meetings
  • Business development, including the development of project proposals and budgets

QUALIFICATIONS:
The ideal candidate is in New York and has work experience in relevant sectors such as climate, equity, energy, and community and regional planning. Other desirable qualities include:

  • Self-motivated and comfortable working independently, yet successful at balancing working as part of a team
  • Excellent writing and public speaking skills and demonstrated ability to translate complex concepts into accessible, audience-specific materials.
  • Comfortable facilitating discussions and making presentations
  • Strong organizational skills, detail orientation, and ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects.
  • Flexibility and adaptability in a fast-paced environment in an emotionally intelligent and collaborative manner.
  • Able to reliably set priorities, manage and meet project deadlines on multiple projects for multiple clients, in a fast-paced environment.
  • Able to travel within New York and the northeast region, as needed

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATIONS, AND EXPERIENCE:
  • MINIMUM EDUCATION: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent. A Master’s degree, other advanced degrees, or educational equivalent is a plus and may be considered in lieu of work experience.
  • PREFERRED EXPERIENCE: Successful candidates will have 2-7 years of relevant work experience in relevant fields which could include public and stakeholder engagement, facilitation, community outreach, conflict management and resolution, strategic process planning/coordination, state and federal government, and/or public policy. Experience with New clean energy
  • REQUIRED SKILLS: Strong writing, presentation, and teamwork skills. Fluency in MS Office (Word, PowerPoint, and Excel).
  • DESIRED SKILLS: Experience with online collaboration tools. Proficiency with database management, Adobe Creative Suite software, and social media tools.
Compensation: $58k-$85k
