Currently, HGL is seeking an Associate Scientist in the Reston Virginia office, with consideration for locations at other Regional HGL offices.

Responsibilities/Duties

The successful candidate will be responsible for assisting with hydrogeologic studies involving data processing, technical analyses, and conceptual site model development, under the supervision of senior geologists and/or hydrogeologists. Duties will include generating potentiometric surface maps; isoconcentration contour maps; stratigraphic maps and cross sections; and plume maps. Other duties may include synthesizing numerous background documents such as reports and/or boring logs to create a conceptual site model, along with developing data tables, figures, and reports. Other tasks may include performing statistical analyses such as Mann-Kendall and other trend tests in ProUCL and/or R. The successful candidate will review and analyze complex datasets using GIS and computer codes to analyze and produce data such as summary statistics and time-series graphs. Duties may also include some travel to support site investigations, data collection, and collaboration with others during the interpretation of site characterization data.

Required Skills

Must have background in GIS (QGIS and/or ESRI products) and coding experience (R/RStudio, Matlab, or Python). A strong quantitative and hydrogeology background is required. Ability to work in a self-directed, fast-paced, results-oriented environment is required. Must be able to multi-task and be detail oriented. Strong written/verbal communication and organizational skills a must.

Preferred Experience

• Some directly related work experience
• Experience coding for data analysis and figure production
• Some technical knowledge with respect to PFAS compounds.
• Experience or training with aquifer testing and analysis is considered a plus.

Required Education

Minimum of M.S. degree in Geology hydrology, hydrogeology, or related earth sciences or engineering with at plus 0-2 years of relevant experience; or a minimum of B.S. with 2-4 years of relevant experience.

Preferred Education

An M.S. degree.

Details

Position is based in the Reston Virginia office, with consideration for locations at other Regional HGL offices. Travel may be required. Maintaining a valid driver's license is required. A pre-hire drug test and physical is required. Some positions may require US Citizenship.
