Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL) is doing just that! Whether it be through science, engineering, technology or professional services, every team member has an opportunity to make their mark on our world. PPPL aims to attract and support people with a rich variety of backgrounds, interests, experiences, and cultural viewpoints. We are committed to equity, diversity, and inclusion and believe that each member of our team contributes to our scientific mission in their own unique way. Come join us!
Responsibilities:
This position will be expected to grow epitaxial diamond using plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) reactors and characterize the resulting material using various instruments. The results of this work will be used for development of new co-doping protocols, recipes, and devices, for diamond quantum sensing applications. The position will work in support of a DOE microelectronics grant and may involve collaboration with industry partners.

Core Duties:

The candidate will carry out diamond synthesis research using PECVD reactors to grow, dope and characterize diamond samples and devices. The candidate will be responsible for:
  • Diamond substrate preparation, utilizing 3rd party contractors and in-house cleaning, preparation, and characterization tools- (20%)
  • Operation of plasma reactors for development of epitaxial synthesis recipes and assistance with plasma diagnostics experiments- (20%)
  • Operation of plasma reactors for fabrication of test device layers and samples for external users- (20%)
  • Post-growth sample characterization, including in-house tools and external contractors and collaborator services- (20%)
  • Development of new diamond synthesis techniques for quantum co-doping applications- (20%)
Qualifications:
Education and Experience:
  • Must have a PhD in materials science, solid state physics and chemistry, plasma science, engineering, or other closely related field.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Experience in plasma processing, for example involving growth or etching and some form of solid state or thin film materials characterization.
  • Experience with diamond is not specifically required.
Physical Requirements:
  • Must be able to interact with laboratory equipment, such as loading samples into a vacuum reactor chamber.
Working Conditions:
  • Regular office or lab setting, remote work may be available from time to time after candidate has familiarized themselves with the work and has strong grasp on responsibilities.
