Summary: The Associate Dental Director is a Dentist that supervises staff and operations for the delivery of high quality, timely and accessible dental care. The Associate Dental Director ensures that the department achieves productivity and quality goals, compliance with organization policies and procedures and is instrumental with implementation of improvement initiatives. The Associate Dental Director assists with recruitment and retention of providers and support staff. The Associate Dental Director serves as leader and mentor for the dental team.

Areas of Responsibility

Clinical Duties:


  • Delivers high quality of care in basic and advanced dental services in all phases of dentistry to patients of all ages
  • Diagnoses and treats patients to achieve excellent results within estimated treatment time with maximum attention to patient comfort
  • Delivers treatment plans to patients along with an informed consent discussion surrounding treatment options
  • Maintains accurate, timely and up-to-date patient records, logs and reports
  • Ensures patient confidentiality consistent with State and Federal law
  • Makes appropriate referrals and communicates with specialists
  • Oversees and assists with planning and execution of a comprehensive program of preventive dentistry
  • Discusses dental needs with patients or patient representatives
  • Provides patient education materials

Administrative Responsibilities:
  • Assists the Chief Dental Officer and the Leadership team in strategic planning of Dental Services.
  • Participates in the implementation of the strategic goals and plays a vital role in achieving these goals at department and individual level
  • Evaluates and manages provider schedules and operational reports to meet organizational goals in quality health care, patient access, and productivity
  • Monitors patient scheduling to ensure efficiency and effectiveness through “perfect day scheduling”
  • Utilizes operational and clinical audit results to lead the team in initiatives of clinical systems improvements, health information technology innovations, and new methods of care delivery
  • Collaborates with the dentists, support staff and other leaders to conduct regular team meetings for purposes of quality improvement in patient care, provider and staff education, and establishment of policies and procedures
  • Supervises providers and support staff via goal setting, coaching, and mentoring to achieve organization goals
  • Manages the dental providers. Conducts regular reviews and meetings.
  • Organizes and leads the peer review process.
  • Conducts performance, peer and competency evaluations via chart audit, direct observation, and analysis of patient and staff satisfaction surveys for purpose of quarterly and yearly review
  • Trains and orients dental staff
  • Assists the Chief Dental Officer in recruitment of new providers and support staff and maintains programs for staff retention
  • Maintains clinic personnel records
  • Reviews and approves timecards, time off requests and reimbursements
  • Creates a positive work environment for staff and promotes a culture of learning and safety
  • Leads daily huddles, monthly All Staff Meetings, monthly Director Meetings, and other management, risk or quality meetings as assigned by the Chief Dental officer
  • Assists the Chief Dental Officer if assigned in any of the following areas of directorship: Health Information Technology, Specialty Access, Risk Management, Quality Improvement, School Based Programs, Continuing Dental Education, and Special Programs
  • Assists the Chief Dental Officer in strategic planning and utilization of Dentists, RDHs and RDAs/DAs at the health center
  • Proficient with all policies and procedures related to provision of care by Dentists and other clinical support staff. Ensures staff compliance with policies and procedures. Writes and review policies and procedures as needed.
  • Assists in management of other teams and departments as appropriate to scope of practice and as assigned by the Chief Dental Officer
  • Stays informed about the Equipment maintenance and repairs program
  • Approves orders for equipment, supplies and materials up to a limit decided by the Chief Dental Officer
  • Assists the Chief Dental Officer with documentation, investigation and follow up of incident reports and complaints
  • Assists with Daily billing audits and various department reports
  • Monitors compliance with all applicable State and Federal regulations, including but not limited to, OSHA, CalOSHA and infection control guidelines
  • Works with the Grants department as necessary

Other Duties
  • Assists the Chief Dental Officer with any other duties as needed

Education and Experience
  • Graduate from an accredited Dental School
  • Current California License and DEA
  • Five or more years of experience providing dental care in good standing
Desired Skills
  • Knowledge of legal and ethical standards for the delivery of dental care
  • Knowledge of related accreditation and certification requirements
  • Knowledge of quality, safety, and/or infection control standards
  • Knowledge of current principles, methods and procedures for the delivery of dental evaluation, prevention, diagnosis and treatment
Licenses and Certifications:
  • State of California License
  • Federal DEA Registration
  • Must maintain CDE as required for certification renewals
  • Must be CPR Certified
