The Technology Innovation Lab at the New York Genome Center seeks a dynamic, self-motivated, team-oriented Associate Computational Biologist to expand dry lab efforts in understanding disease mechanisms. We are interested in developing integrative multi-modal data analysis tools incorporating single cell omics data, imaging data, clinical phenotypes, variants and genotypes.


As Associate Computational Biologist, you will be a critical early career member of a collaborative team that develops cutting edge computational methodologies and technologies in order to understand the mechanisms of neuroimmunology, cancer immunology and aging, in an efficient and comprehensive manner, which will accelerate the advancement of clinical therapeutic hypotheses. You will assist efforts in the development and application of new computational approaches, and to coordinate such work across the lab. You will investigate and test new methods and technologies for project advancement through imaging and machine learning tools designed in the lab. Under the supervision of the project lead(s), you will critically assess the merit of various experimental approaches, plan and conduct the analyses, interpret the results and help decision-making on the project.


Key Responsibilities include (but are not limited to):

  • Work as a key part of a team to advance multiple computational (bio)engineering projects.
  • Apply existing and novel algorithms to data sets, analyze data quality, critically review and analyze results, communicate results to biologists, computational biologists, software engineers, and clinicians.
  • Develop data analysis strategies, write algorithms, and deploy computational tools for the exploration of very large data sets.
  • Explore novel data visualization tools, with emphasis on integrating diverse data types or sets
  • Implement or improve algorithms in software tools for distribution to the global research community
  • Apply machine learning techniques to quality control procedures
  • Propose and implement upgrades to existing algorithms, tools and processes
  • Track all work and issues in the appropriate databases/tracking sheets;
  • Attend team meetings and present results. Contribute to peer-reviewed scientific publications.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • BSc or M.Sc in software engineering, bioengineering, computer science, mathematics, physics, bioinformatics, biostatistics or equivalent fields required;
  • At least 1 year of undergraduate independent research experience (outside of coursework) required;
  • At least 1 year of experience working with bioimaging and next-generation sequencing data required;
  • Demonstrated experience with Unix/Linux environments (including shell scripting) is a required;
  • Strong programming skills and experience with programming languages, preferably Python, C++, Stan and R required;
  • Demonstrated experience with Google Cloud and AWS environments considered a strong plus;
  • Demonstrated effective communication skills and ability to interact professionally with all levels of staff and external collaborators required;
  • Proven ability to work independently with guidance and mentorship required;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work efficiently in a dynamic, multidisciplinary environment required.
  • Strong research, organizational, problem solving and communication skills (both written and oral) required, coupled with a strong attention to detail and scientific curiosity.

Salary

The salary range for this position is $64,000-80,000 per year. Base pay offered may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. In addition, NYGC offers a full range of medical, financial, and other benefits as well as generous time off.


Work Flexibility

NYGC has established a flexible work policy to give employees and other staff more ability to balance their work, personal commitments, and commuting challenges. The incumbent in this position is eligible for a flexible work schedule or hybrid remote work arrangement with supervisory approval.


About the New York Genome Center

The New York Genome Center (NYGC) is an independent, nonprofit, academic research organization dedicated to advancing genomic research. NYGC scientists and staff are furthering new approaches to diagnosing and treating neurological diseases and cancer through their unique capabilities in whole genome sequencing, RNA sequencing, state-of-the art analytics, and the development of genomic tools. NYGC concentrates specifically on disease-based research in the following areas: neuropsychiatric disease (autism, schizophrenia, bipolar); neurodegenerative disease (ALS, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Huntington’s), and cancer.


Located in Lower Manhattan, the New York Genome Center was founded by and remains closely affiliated with the leading academic medical centers and research universities in the New York region, engaging in research projects with and for these institutions. Essential to our collaborative work is an outstanding faculty, whose members typically hold a joint appointment at NYGC and a partner university. They support our scientific mission by conducting independent research in areas of mutual interest to us and the wider scientific community.
