The Assistant Director of Outdoor Programs serves as the primary coordinator for outdoor education and activities and as a resource to campus groups using outdoor activities for leadership development and team building.


This is considered a full-full time, salaried, benefits eligible position. The hiring salary range for the position is $51,300 - $64,100 per year.


Requirements


Core Responsibilities:

  • Plans annual calendar and provides administration, management, and field instruction of outdoor skills, leadership development, and recreation programs
  • Develops risk management standards and plans for all outdoor program operations and serves as point of contact for emergency response
  • Oversees the operation, maintenance, and risk mitigation of the Nelson Recreation Climbing Wall, College gear room, bike shop and Burgin Lodge
  • Provides training and supervision to student staff responsible for the daily operations of the climbing wall, gear room and bike shop.
  • Serves as org liaison for student orgs and directly advises orgs related to outdoor pursuits such as the Middlebury Mountain Club and Outdoor Interest House.
  • Manages inventory and operating budget for facility upkeep and purchasing supplies as needed
  • Serves as a campus resource on backcountry and remote travel for faculty, staff, and students looking to host programs or classes in remote settings
  • Maintains electronic records of programs, trips, post-program evaluations, accidents and incidents related to Outdoor Programs

Qualifications

Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience:

  • Demonstrated ability to build partnerships and communicate effectively with a broad range of constituents, including faculty, administration, staff, students, families, and community members
  • Demonstrated ability to manage risk in outdoor settings and ability to develop appropriate polices, procedures, and guidelines for college and student programs
  • Experience serving as an advocate for students
  • Ability to implement a program that operates from an anti-oppression framework
  • Backcountry travel experience in all seasons
  • High level of technical and instructional expertise and proficiency in some or all of the following: rock and ice climbing, mountaineering, expedition canoeing, backcountry and telemark skiing, and whitewater kayaking
  • Outdoor Wilderness First Aid, or ability to procure within 6 months of hire
