JOB SUMMARY

The Division of Physical & Biological Sciences has four Assistant Dean positions, each with a different focus. Under the general direction of the Dean, all four positions serve as principal staff officers for academic and administrative affairs, advising the Dean, acting in the Dean's absence, and providing both on- and off-campus liaison services. As the Dean's direct management team, they share responsibility for strategic and academic planning, development, and liaison duties. In addition, each has primary responsibility for specific areas of divisional operations and programs while retaining familiarity with all areas of administration.

The Assistant Dean for Student Success oversees the management of the division's student-facing side of our academic programs including student excellence, engagement and inclusion.

Salary Information: Salary Range: $125,000 - $160,000/year. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.

JOB DUTIES

20% - Strategic/Academic Planning, Development and Liaison
  • Oversee and/or perform reviews and analyses of existing divisional programs, new initiatives, and resources with consideration for enrollment trends, resource support, graduate education, etc. Make recommendations to the dean, department chairs, research directors, and campus administrators and develop strategic plans to implement recommendations.
  • Participate in the review and analysis of current campus financial allocations and develop and prepare resource requests and budgetary presentations for the central and divisional administration.
  • In collaboration with divisional faculty, department chairs, research directors, and campus leaders and administrators (Campus Provost/EVC, VP/Dean-Undergraduate Affairs, VP/Dean-Graduate Studies, VP-Academic Affairs, VC-Research, VC-Business & Administrative Services, VC-University Relations, VC-Information Technology Services, AVC-Academic Personnel, AVC-Staff Human Resources, VC-Planning and Budget, Admissions, Educational Partnership Center, colleges, etc.), establish and implement divisional and campus policy, developing creative solutions and alternatives to address varied and complex issues with widespread impact.
  • Participate in development of and provide strategic and planning support to divisional committees and task forces in the areas of program development, curriculum, enrollment, faculty recruitment and retention, space and capital planning, advising, etc. Direct and/or formulate policies and long-term strategies for enhancing the division's vitality and effectiveness in achieving its broad goals.

65% - Student Excellence, Engagement and Inclusion
  • In collaboration with the associate deans for academic planning and diversity, equity, and inclusion, develops and implements the division's vision and strategic plan for student excellence and student engagement and inclusion. Stays well informed about trends in higher education regarding student excellence and engagement. Engages with campus units focused on student success (see list below).
  • High level direction and oversight of divisional advising and mentoring programs.
    • Directs the Science Scholars Program (first year advising and mentoring for frosh and transfer students): Strategic planning, support, and advocacy for the program. Direct supervision of the Science Scholars advising team.
    • Direct supervision of the division's lead advisor.
    • Indirect support for the undergraduate and graduate advising teams in departments and programs.
    • Direct supervision of the STEM Diversity Research Programs director and oversight of the program.
  • With the assistant and associate deans of academic programs, oversees assessment and analysis of instruction and the curriculum, especially in relationship to student success. Assists in implementation of innovations.
    • Conducts and supervises research on student success interventions. Creates reports and measurements and makes recommendations for changes. Suggests and assists with implementation of curricular innovations to improve student outcomes.
    • Supports faculty in the development of new academic programs and revisions to existing programs to improve student success.
    • As needed, and with assistance as appropriate from the assistant dean of academic programs, supports faculty and staff who are writing to improve student success.
    • Advocates at the campus level for resources needed to support student success in academic programs via Supplemental Instruction support and coordination and other approaches.
  • Oversees student focused outreach and professional development at the division level.
    • Provides support for student organizations in the division, including department groups.
    • Advocates for and develops non-academic professional development opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students.
    • Develops outreach programs for underserved populations.
  • Direct supervision of the division's testing coordinator. Oversees divisional DRC program in coordination with central offices, as needed.
  • Ensures divisional representation on campus-level committees related to student success, including advising-related committees.
  • Creates and maintains a STEM student support website (in collaboration with BSOE).
  • Provides policy and procedural guidance for the associate dean for diversity, equity, and inclusion and associate dean for academic programs as needed on student success. Policy/procedural expert & liaison: UG Advising, Div of Student Affairs & Success, EOP, Global Engagement, LSS/MSI, HSI Initiatives, DRC.

10% - External Communications
  • In conjunction with assistant director of communications, helps to develop the external communications for the division.

5% - Events Management
  • Works with the assistant dean of academic programs to balance workload among internally and externally facing events.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • An understanding of the opportunities and challenges facing higher education with experience and background sufficient to conceptualize, communicate, and implement the mission and goals of the Division of Physical and Biological Sciences.
  • Excellent analytical, planning, management and organizational skills, and related experience to creatively address instructional, research, and administrative issues, to effectively define and implement strategic plans and goals, and to complete critical projects and tasks in a timely manner. Extensive experience using problem solving skills.
  • Demonstrated leadership and skills to manage and motivate a diverse administrative, professional, and technical staff, fostering teamwork and formulating and instituting reporting structures and processes to achieve maximum functionality and efficiency. Flexibility and skill in leading staff and other teams successfully through organizational change and crisis.
  • Strong negotiating, mediation, and decision-making skills and experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate complex academic and administrative issues clearly both verbally and in writing, to understand the concerns of various groups, to use information gathered through appropriate consultation in proposing solutions, and to represent and explain the mission and work of Physical and Biological Sciences to campus.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills demonstrated by an ability to interact effectively with faculty, students, staff, and the general public, and an ability to develop and maintain good working relationship with these individuals.
  • Demonstrated ability to research and make presentations on institutional and administrative issues to varied audiences, large and small.
  • Knowledge of policies and procedures relative to resource planning, management, and operations. Experience assessing potential life/safety, financial, property, and legal liability. Sufficient experience to train staff to understand and minimize institutional risk.
  • Academic background and experience in student success research.
  • Prior experience in student affairs programming.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Advanced degree in related area and/or equivalent experience / training.
  • Terminal degree in a related field (PhD, JD, etc.).
  • Strong knowledge of University and departmental principles and procedures.
  • Experience working in higher education.
  • Knowledge of UC policies and procedures.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
  • Selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check.
