BACKGROUND:

The National Domestic Workers Alliance (NDWA) is the leading national voice for dignity and fairness for domestic workers in the United States. Founded in 2007, NDWA works for the respect, recognition, and inclusion in labor protections of domestic and home care workers across the country. NDWA is winning improved working conditions while building a powerful

movement rooted in the human rights, dignity and equality of domestic workers, home care workers, immigrant women, and Black women.

NDWA was founded in 2007 by domestic workers and organizers from around the country. Our national alliance has grown from this founding group of 13 organizations to now more than 70 affiliate organizations, and local chapters developed by NDWA. To date, the Alliance comprises more than 250,000 nannies, housekeepers, and home care workers in all 50 states.

Position Summary: NDWA is seeking a passionate, dedicated, self-starter to serve as an attorney in the General Counsel’s Office. The position will assist with compliance programs (including but not limited to tax law, election and campaign finance law, employment and labor law), provide training to staff on legal issues affecting NDWA, oversee the management of all contracts throughout the organization, and provide direct support to the legal team on other matters.

PRIMARY ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist the General Counsel’s office on a wide range of legal matters, including but not limited to:

    • IRS compliance, including laws and regulations on exempt organizations, with a focus on 501(c)(3), 501(c)(4), and 527 organizations;

    • Employment and labor law, including FLSA, collective bargaining agreement, worker classification compliance, and HR policy;

    • Campaign finance law, including FEC, state, and local election law;

    • Fiscal sponsorship, grantmaking, and other charitable organization-related matters;

    • Other matters as needed.

  • Manage NDWA’s contract review process by generating contracts using template agreements, coordinating contract negotiations and executions, and filing executed contracts in a centralized database.

  • Run our compliance programs, including managing staff tracking of lobbying activity and helping complete required disclosures.

  • Provide direct and confidential support to the General Counsel’s office with other tasks, including research, scheduling and administrative tasks as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS:


  • J.D. from an accredited law school

  • Admission to a state bar

  • At least 2 years of legal experience in a nonprofit organization or in a relevant field

  • Some familiarity with charitable organizations, lobbying disclosure requirements and 501(c)(3), 501(c)(4) and 527 work.

  • Strong organizational skills, and creative problem solver

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, DocuSign, and Google Suite (especially Google Charts and Google Forms) are required.

  • Alignment with NDWA’s vision and values, including a commitment to economic, race and gender justice.

  • Proven ability to learn quickly, work independently, meet multiple deadlines with a keen attention to detail.

  • Ability to work and collaborate with diverse staff in person and remotely and as part of a high-performing team, in a fast-paced, experimental organization.

  • Spanish proficiency is a plus.
