Job description

The USSTRATCOM History Office requires the services of a senior military or diplomatic historian and an experienced archivist (or librarian) to deliver timely and accurate historical support to the CDR and CCMD staff. Historical support services include documenting the USSTRATCOM contribution to national security policy through research and writing of the USSTRATCOM official history; developing, researching, and writing other historical products; conducting, transcribing, and editing oral history interviews; researching and responding to requests for information; and providing professional archival management, research, and reference services.

  • Knowledge of a broad range of historical fields, with emphasis on one or more of the following: modern military history, strategic deterrence theory, post-World War II defense policy, post-World War II foreign policy, kinetic and non-kinetic strategic weapons and warfare, arms control and disarmament, and/or strategic nuclear/ nuclear weapons planning and policy.
  • Knowledge of guidelines and instructions dealing with the protection of classified information, the release of sensitive information and the Freedom of Information Act.
  • Professional knowledge of archival principles, concepts, methodology, techniques, and a familiarity with National Archive and Records Administration (NARA) standards and publications, with an advanced degree in Archival Studies or Library and Information Science.
  • Requires 5 or more years of demonstrated relevant experience.
  • Ability to collect, organize, and catalog large amounts of diversely formatted data drawn from a wide variety of sources and critically evaluate materials to determine worthiness for inclusion in the archive.
  • Knowledge of methods, procedures, and techniques used to assist researchers and staff members in locating and retrieving archival materials, including maintaining comprehensive finding aids.
  • Thorough knowledge of digitization standards, including the development and maintenance of metadata requirements.
