Job Summary: Counselor shall work with students, parents/guardians, teachers, administrators, and resource agencies with the goal of improving student educational experience. Counselor will provide responsive support to students’ academic, social, etc. needs. Provide career path guidance to students.


Qualifications:
Master’s degree in School Counseling or related field. Valid Pennsylvania certification in Secondary Guidance Counseling. Proficient knowledge of different counseling models and practices. Exceptional school guidance skills for various classroom settings. Must have a professional attitude.


POSITION FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Counsel students individual and/or in groups.
  • Advise and provide information to parents/guardians and teachers
  • Collect information for special reports from teachers, students, and records
  • Assist students filling out application forms for school, financial aid, and jobs
  • Prepare student transcripts for schools, employers, etc.
  • Compile class rank data for all students in grades nine through twelve
  • In September and January, review the records of all seniors to check their progress in meeting graduation requirements. The Counselor shall talk to any students who may have difficulty meeting graduation requirements and write letters in conjunction with the High School Principal, to parent(s), guardian(s) regarding any such problems.
  • Assist the High School Principal in coordinating and administering the testing program at the High School
  • Coordinate and set up visits with representatives from colleges, technical schools, the military services, and private training facilities
  • Call and write schools to set up visitation appointments and testing for students.
  • Shall provide information on career areas and schools and administer and interpret interest tests
  • Act as a contact person for parents/guardians and students regarding financial aid, educational planning, and student grades and programs.
  • Discuss student programs and make recommendations as to what can be done in conjunction with teachers, parents, and administration
  • Schedule students in appropriate classes depending on post-secondary plan in conjunction with parents, teachers, and administration
  • Work with students on education/vocational post-secondary planning
  • Shall keep abreast of current practices in the field of guidance and counseling through attendance at professional conferences/workshops
  • Shall assist the administration in developing a master schedule and individual student schedules
  • Shall assist the administration in making arrangements for enrollment in summer program
  • Supervise and maintain cumulative records and enroll students in grades 9 through 12
  • Maintain a professional relationship with colleagues, students, parents, and community members.
  • Use effective communication skills to present information accurately and clearly.
  • Participate in staff development activities to improve job-related skills
  • Keep informed of and comply with federal, state, district, and school regulations and policies
  • Attend and participate in faculty meetings and serve on staff committees as required.
  • Maintain confidentiality.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Perform other duties which may be assigned by the Building Principal, Assistant Superintendent and/or Superintendent.


GENERAL POSITION REQUIREMENTS


PHYSICAL CAPABILITIES: Must be able to stand 1 hour at one time

Must be able to sit 4 hours at one time

Must be able to walk 1 hour at one time

Must be able to bend/stop, squat, and reach above shoulder

Must be able to lift and carry up to 20 lbs. frequently

Must be able to lift and carry up to 25 lbs. occasionally

Must be able to do repetitive actions including grasping, pushing, pulling, fine manipulation, twisting/turning, writing, or printing

Must be able to adhere to daily time schedule

Must be able to hear (40 decibel loss maximum)

Must be able to verbally communicate

Must have vision requirements or near acuity of 20 inches or less and far acuity of 20 feet or more with depth perception, accommodation, and field of vision.


PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT: Position encompasses entire building and grounds. Center of operation is the classroom which is ventilated and well lighted.


SPECIFIC SKILLS: Must possess computer/software skills

Must possess excellent oral and written communication skills

Must have ability to operate various office equipment
