SERVICE OPPORTUNITY TITLE: Healthy Aging: Food Security Coordinator

ORGANIZATIONAL OVERVIEW

The Ministry of Caring (MoC) is committed to creating safe, decent, and affordable housing and program services for low-income senior citizens ages 62 years and older. Since our first affordable senior housing project, Sacred Heart Village I opened in 2001 two additional projects have been completed, Sacred Heart Village II and Village of St. John. MoC is now developing Villa Maria, a fourth housing development project for low-income senior citizens.

Our programs’ staff and volunteers offer hospitality and friendship while providing basic needs to help the poor gain self-sufficiency, focusing on restoration of their self-worth, and renewing hope for the future. Our deepest core belief is reflected in all that we do. Ours is a simple but compelling belief, that the poor should never be treated poorly but with love, dignity, and respect.

MINISTRY OF CARINGS AMERICORPS

CaringCorps” Service Project Focus MoC’s CaringCorps will address an unmet community service need of food insecurity, a recognized community problem among very low-income senior citizens.

AMERICORPS COMMUNITY SERVICE TEAM PROJECT GOALS:

  • Develop, collaborate, and maintain positive relationships with vital community partners: Food Bank of Delaware, Vocational Technical schools’ culinary arts and hospitality entities, local farmers’ markets, USDA Farm communities, local supermarkets, Delaware Chefs’ Association Delaware Restaurant Association, Highmark Blue Cross/Blue Shield, and St. Clare Medical/St. Francis Healthcare.
  • Understand AmeriCorps’ theory of change and logic model concepts, evidence-based practices and best practices, performance measure, quality outputs, outcomes, and evaluation process requirements, within a reasonable time frame to engage over 56 residents in healthy futures interventions, during the first five months of the program service. Establishing two focus groups that address senior joint pain, monitoring and management and healthy eating.

INTENDED PROGRAM OUTCOMES:

Implementation of a three-year AmeriCorps Community Service Team focused project, that can be replicated and financially sustained after a three-year program grant period. Increased knowledge and reported behavioral change related to healthy eating, healthy cooking, fitness, and lowing medical cost due to very low food insecurities, among low-income senior citizens.

Establishment of a well-planned short and long-term outcomes, the adoption of healthy food practices; and changes in health condition or status (food security).

MEMBER DUTIES

Six AmeriCorps Community Service Team members will collaborate with partners that are vital to the success in meeting AmeriCorps’ healthy futures performance measurement.

The team will host two Caring Corps Senior Citizen health fair events, in collaboration with partners and volunteers.

The team will enhance the existing framework of a one-year formula grant demonstration pilot, for the implementation of a three-year AmeriCorps’ healthy futures focused project.

In collaboration with the aforementioned partners, the team will creatively and uniquely utilize MoC’s state of the art amenities and features such as: dining and social halls for gathering, indoor and outdoor cafés, convenience stores, commercial kitchens, dining rooms, community rooms, fitness centers, libraries, and computer rooms.

The team will coordinate and facilitate community service interventions not limited to healthy eating and healthy cooking demonstrations, healthy food options workshops, light fitness classes, food preparation counseling, referrals to food programs and hospitality food service presentations.

Service Members will complete 70% in community service, 20% in training and 10% fundraising, as per Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Section 2520.50

PROGRAM BENEFITS

Service members will receive a bi-weekly living allowance, and an education award upon successful completion of community service. Members can serve up to three years of AmeriCorps service. Site locations are accessible on public transportation.

TERMS

Permits working at another job during off hours, permits attendance at school during off hours. Uniforms (AmeriCorps Service gear) are provided and required.

The enrolled Service Member will serve 900 hours over an 11-month period.

The official start date is Thursday, October 6, 2022 and ends on August 31, 2023.

Service Member will receive a living allowance (stipend) of $9,000.00 paid at $818.00 bi-weekly.

Upon completion of service hours, the member will receive a Segal Education Award in the amount of $3,247.50. This amount ultimately is determined by your number of service hours.
