Position Summary

This position is a member of the Aviation department of the Palm Springs International Airport and performs routine and general cleaning, janitorial and custodial duties, landscape maintenance, and a variety of related tasks relative to assigned areas of responsibility.

Examples of Essential and General Responsibilities

Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Perform routine and general cleaning and maintenance activities on airside, landside and terminal areas, equipment and facilities.
  • Perform landscaping duties on airport grounds including outdoor patios; mow, trim, prune, edge, rake, fertilize, water, plant and cultivate landscaped areas as necessary.
  • Sweep, clear and clean gutters, curbs, culverts and catch basins; perform general grounds clean-up and outdoor cleaning; perform other minor maintenance and repair tasks as necessary.
  • Operate and maintain equipment used in the performance of assigned duties.
  • Perform maintenance and repair on a variety of equipment and systems including sprinkler systems.
  • Clean, polish, and sanitize building surfaces including walls, stairs and floors; dust and polish furniture and fixtures.
  • Clean and maintain terminal restrooms; clean mirrors, fixtures and floors; replace and maintain toiletry supplies.
  • Prepare rooms and arrange furniture for meetings and special events.
  • Observe and report the need for repairs; if possible, make minor repairs.
  • Observe and implement safe work practices and procedures.
  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

Minimum and Preferred Requirements

Minimum requirements must be clearly demonstrated on the application to be considered, however, meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee an invitation to compete further in the selection process. (One year of work experience is the equivalent of 12 months of full-time work. "Full-time work" means at least 36 hours of work over a period of one week or 1,872 hours of work over a period of at least 12 months.) Qualifications noted as "desirable" or "preferred" are not included as part of the minimum requirements.

Experience
Janitorial and/or ground maintenance experience is preferred.

Training
High School diploma or equivalent education is required.

License or Certificates
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, and maintain a valid California driver license with a satisfactory driving record is required. (A driving record may be deemed unsatisfactory for any of the following reasons: three or more moving violations or reportable accident within the last three years; conviction of driving under the influence within the last five years.)
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain upon appointment, an Airport Security Identification Display Area (SIDA) Badge, which is approved through the Federal Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is required.
Special Requirements:
  • Must be willing and able to work various hours including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Incumbent will be enrolled in the California Department of Motor Vehicle (DMV) Pull Notice Program. The DMV Pull Notice Program provides information on the incumbents driving record and driving record status on a periodic basis to the City.
  • Incumbent must successfully complete, or have completed, the necessary pre-employment/placement background investigation, physical, and drug screen.

This position works in an Aviation environment with exposure to noise, dust, grease, fumes, motorized equipment, inclement weather conditions, and potentially dangerous situations and may require maintaining physical condition necessary for light to moderate lifting and carrying, and walking, standing and sitting for prolonged periods of time.
