Job description

*Full-time AmeriCorps Position: Sept 1, 2023 - July 21, 2024*

Ready to make a difference to the kids in the Watsonville community, while gaining job skills and earning up to $10,000 for your education as an AmeriCorps member?

NDMVA teams serve with local partners to expand access to education and other social services. NDMV’s primary approach is to offer small-group and 1-on-1 instruction in K-12 schools, and have additional positions where members will conduct specialized outreach to improve access to necessary resources to local families. As a member, you will serve at a Pajaro Valley Elementary School for 11 months, full-time (up to 1700 hours), under the supervision of an on-site supervisor, and city Site Director.

Our members are a team of talented, diverse individuals committed to serving the community of Watsonville full-time for 11 months. Each member is placed at a primary service site, but is supported by their team regularly throughout the year as we come together for bi-weekly team development meetings, occasional Saturday service projects, team weekends, and NDA's Annual National MidYear Conference. The majority of our members choose to live in community with their team members during the service year in program housing in Watsonville which is subsidized by the program.

The Notre Dame Mission Volunteers AmeriCorps (NDMVA) member is responsible for facilitating safe, in-person academic support for elementary students. The member will provide small group academic support and mentorship in daily classroom settings, and support for the after school Extended Learning Programs, overseen by an onsite supervisor. This person must be an effective communicator and team player with a positive attitude and an interest in leadership in order to ensure a safe and encouraging environment where children are engaged with their educational goals. Per the Notre Dame AmeriCorps Volunteer mission, the NDMVA member will have the goal of encouraging student engagement in learning by supporting students’ individual progress. The AmeriCorps member must be willing to adapt to an evolving environment as COVID-19 presents new challenges to the Watsonville community, and be able to collaborate positively with adults and youth.

Because half-year NDMVA members are expected to fulfill 900 hours of combined service and training over the course of their 6-month program, the member is expected to be serving at school 35-40 hours/week on average. The member will be released from their on-site duties to participate in on-going team trainings (biweekly on Friday mornings) and periodic NDMVA team activities and service projects as overseen by their Site Director, including a 3-day conference outside of Baltimore, Maryland.
