Job Purpose

As a core team member representing Integrated Supply Chain (ISC), the Advance Manufacturing Engineer (AME) plays a key role in the development and production release of successful products and long-term product maintenance. The AME provides DFMA support to the new product introduction teams, performs make vs. buy decisions and manages product tooling budgets. With the support of the Design Engineering lead, plant Manufacturing Engineer and Advanced Quality Engineer, the AME champions design changes that will improve product quality, reduce product cost, and improve product manufacturability.

What Will You Do?

  • Represent Manufacturing as a core team member on New Product Introduction (NPI) projects, product enhancement projects and on core business teams.

  • Provide timely communications between the NPI project team and the ISC functions.

  • With the support of the Design Engineering Lead and plant ME, the AME plays a leadership role in the following activities.

    • DFMA activities during product development.

    • Develop & manage product tooling budget.

    • Lead Phase Gate input from ISC team members.

    • Involve the plant assembly ME, fabrication MEs and suppliers related to manufacturability, quality and cost discussions.

  • Assume primary responsibility for the manufacturability of the product. This includes ensuring manufacturing input from Toro plants and component suppliers are considered by design in first phases of a project.

  • Address assembly issues uncovered during design reviews or prototype builds and any component manufacturability versus tolerance concerns prior to production.

  • Manage the product development tooling budget, including initial estimates, IAR creation, and spending authorization.

  • Select optimum tooling method for functional needs and volumes.

  • Coordinate tooling releases to ensure tool availability to meet schedule.

  • Provide leadership to explore and implement the use of new technologies, methodologies and materials that can be incorporated into the product design and manufacturing processes to reduce costs, enhance product performance and quality and/or enhance the state of the art of manufacturing or product development.

  • Co-manage the prototype manufacturing process by working with the manufacturing plant, NPD Sourcing, Prototype Buyers, Sourcing, PDL and Design Engineering to procure and coordinate prototype materials for the manufacture of prototypes.

  • Work with Sourcing, Manufacturing and others to develop a lead time schedule for all components that will assist the project team in developing a design release schedule that will allow component and tooling procurement within reasonable time limits.

  • Support manufacturing during prototype builds, the pilot build and the transition to full production.

  • Works closely with Design Engineering, Plant Manufacturing Engineering, Sourcing, Quality, Cost Estimating, Finance and Marketing.

  • Must develop a strong professional working relationship with all Toro manufacturing locations and have an in-depth knowledge base of all internal manufacturing capabilities.

What Do You Need?

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Industrial or Agricultural Engineering or Engineering Technologies is required.

  • Experience in Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Design Engineering, Quality and/or project management in a manufacturing plant is required.

  • Two to four years of experience in a manufacturing plant environment, plus successful completion of at least three major product development or equivalent projects.

  • Previous data management experience required (e.g., PDMLink, Windchill, SAP)

  • Proficiency in CreoView/CreoIllustrate/PTC products is beneficial.

  • Proficiency in MS Office Applications is required.

  • Able to work independently with minimum supervision.

  • Demonstrated ability to balance multiple projects, in different stages of design or manufacture.

  • Proven experience partnering with cross-functional teams to achieve results.

Other Job-Related Components:

  • Must be comfortable in manufacturing plant environment, participating in prototype builds and production start up

  • Up to 30% travel may be required
