Summary Duties and Responsibilities:

The Activity Specialist will develop and promote empowering and engaging programs that support the mission of Nevada HAND Senior Living Company. This includes creating a monthly calendar and monthly Newsletters that convey warmth, community life/health, and purpose, supporting the mission of Nevada HAND Senior Living Company.

Essential Functions and Work Duties: *
The following essential functions of this position are performed personally, in cooperation with the supervisor, and/or in coordination with other staff. Additional work functions and duties may be assigned.

*
Regulatory Compliance*:
The Activity Specialist must ensure sustained compliance with all regulatory requirements and be knowledgeable of the following laws, regulations, and programs, all in-inclusive:

*
Nevada Revised Statutes (NRS): 200 Crimes Against the Person, 426 Persons with Disabilities, 427A Services to Aging Persons and Persons with Disabilities,

*
Nevada Administrative Code (NAC): 200 Crimes/Elder Abuse, 427A Services to Aging Persons,

*
Medicaid Services Manual (MSM), Chapter 2200, and Provider Types 57 and 59.

*
Low Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) Program.

*
Resident and Family Relations: *

  • Promote the positive image of HAND Senior Living by treating residents, family, visitors, vendors, etc., respectfully. The Activity Specialist will work to communicate effectively with residents, staff, visitors, etc., courteously, and pleasantly.

*
Provide quality services in all aspects of a resident’s life.

*
Comply with HIPAA regulations at all times. Maintain confidentiality of residents, both verbal and printed form. Keep all information confidential concerning HAND Senior Living residents, family members, and staff, consistent with HIPAA regulations. Refrain from discussing resident issues with persons that are not on a need to know basis.

*
Demonstrate politeness, courtesy, and discretion at all times. Address the resident by Mr., Mrs., Dr., etc., unless otherwise specified by the resident.

*
Maintain a positive attitude, support peers and supervisors.

*
Have full knowledge and understanding of resident rights.

  • Report any suspected elder abuse (physical, mental, emotional, sexual, verbal, or fiduciary) to the Department of Aging Services. Report to supervisor/Administrator immediately.

*
Maintain patience, tact, and emotional maturity when communicating with residents and family members. Treat residents with consideration and dignity.

*
Demonstrate understanding of communication problems related to disabilities associated with stroke, dementia, or deafness.

*
Resident Activities: *

  • Ensure a safe environment where resident rights are preserved.

*
Promote independence, dignity, and autonomy.

*
Direct individual and group activities as requested.

*
Develop a monthly activities calendar as directed by the NAC 449 regulations. Approve and post the monthly activity calendar in a high trafficked area for residents to see no later than the 1st day of the month. Ensure that approved activities are empowering and engaging not passive and paternalistic. Ensure the calendar is professional, clean, and easy to read.

*
Develop a monthly newsletter that conveys the warmth and community-lifestyle of HAND Senior Living. The monthly newsletter must be professional in presentation, easy to read, and include occasional resident-specific information as needed, upcoming events, new partnerships, and services available.

*
Assist all partners associated with the community and ensure appropriate paperwork is on file, including but not limited to a memorandum of understanding (MOU), certificates of liability insurance, and any other appropriate documents.

*
Keep a daily participation spreadsheet for monthly review, for participation audits. These records will be kept for 5 years.

*
Implement residents’ ideas into a daily activity.

*
Promote upcoming events with the Communication & Marketing Director and assist wherever needed.

*
Work with the Food & Dining department to ensure all holiday celebrations are resident appropriate and meals/décor all align together to enhance the home-like feel and sense of community.

*
Conduct the Activity Program Assessment with each resident upon move-in and annually.

*
Complete the Dietary Restrictions audit and provide the copy to the Food & Dining Department

*
Take new residents' photos to be used for medical charts and review the photo from time to time to ensure the photo is true to the resident’s current appearance.

*
The Activity Specialist will assist and aid in the Resident Council if needed. Resident Council must meet monthly. The Activity Specialist will work with the Administrator to ensure the Resident Council's corrective actions are completed. Will assist in annual new council voting.

*
Track Volunteer-Pool Database: keep track of volunteer hours, credentialing, and volunteer signed documents for regular audits by the VP of Assisted Living.

*
Track all transportation services utilized quarterly and submit the required report to the VP of Assisted Living.

*
Beauty Salon – assists with making appointments and liaising between resident and salon.

  • Report critical events/conditions to the Licensed Administrator/Assistant Administrator for proper review and investigation.

*
Safety: *

  • Promote a safe and secure environment while maintaining the independence, autonomy, and dignity of the residents.

*
Remove residents from any unsafe situations immediately.

*
Report safety issues: Report frayed electrical wiring, loose carpeting, broken equipment, or any other unsafe condition to the supervisor.

*
Complete work orders for the maintenance staff as needed.

*
Use appropriate body mechanics when lifting, moving, and/or transferring residents.

*
Obtain assistance from other staff, as necessary.

*
Use appropriate safety equipment when needed.

*
Food* Services and Housekeeping:

  • Assist kitchen staff in taking food orders, serving residents; aid in opening small packages, pouring beverages, cutting meats, etc., as needed.

*
Clean/mop spills immediately.

*
Maintain clean workstations.

*
Teamwork: *

  • Demonstrate a willingness to assist staff members in other departments.

*
Respond to requests for assistance in a positive and timely manner.

*
Provide quality service in non-healthcare areas.

*
Participate in the weekly Care Team meeting.

*
Qualifications and Skills Required: *

Education and/or *Experience:

  • Must be eighteen (18) years of age or older and have a High School Diploma or equivalent.

*
Certified Nursing Assistant or Residential Assistant Training preferred.

*
Minimum of one (1) year experience providing care to seniors.

*
Must obtain and maintain Health Card within 30 days of hire.

*
Other Skills and Abilities*:

*
Ability to read, write, and speak in English. Spanish language fluency a plus.

*
Must meet health assessment requirements and be able to perform each of the essential position functions.

*
Must have a sincere interest in and desire to work with a geriatric population.

*
Demonstrate knowledge of geriatric care: dentures, nails, hearing aids.

*
Must have motivation and the ability to work with a team; ability to motivate people; ability to effectively communicate with staff, residents and families; ability to work varied hours.

Physical Requirements: *

Body agility is important: maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling when walking, standing, or crouching.

*
Lifting: raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position-to-position.

Stooping: frequently bending body downward and forward by bending the spine at the waist, requiring full use of the lower extremities and back muscles.

*
Kneeling: frequently bending legs at knees to come to rest on knee or knees.

*
Reaching: frequently extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction.

Handling: frequently seizing, holding, grasping, turning, or otherwise working with hand or hands.

Regularly required to use hand to finger, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms, to perform/demonstrate resident activities, to talk or hear using the telephone, and to use the computer keyboard, and mouse while seated at a desk.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

Medium work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up-to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up-to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Walking: Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly to assist residents with activities.

The worker may potentially be exposed to infectious diseases.
