Center for Transforming Lives has an immediate opening in our Finance & Accounting department for an Accounting Specialist.

At Center for Transforming Lives, our innovative and collaborative teams work to build better futures for women and children experiencing homelessness. As an Accounting Specialist, you will provide daily, weekly, monthly, and annual task completion related to various review, processing and proper recording of deposits, accounts receivable, accounts payable, payroll and other general journal entries with due best-practice consideration. You will also help to establish and maintain proper internal controls and works directly with the Lead Staff Accountant to maintain accurate and timely financial records.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Communicate effectively and timely with members of the accounting team to insure adequate operational knowledge across all departments and insure they are aware of organizational goals and objectives, budgetary needs, and expectations of performance.
  • Collaborate with other members of the accounting team and help in areas need, Grant Billing, Account Payable, or Front Desk personnel.
  • Works collaboratively with the Lead Staff Accountant and other relevant staff to carry out daily, monthly, annual tasks of accounting and related support systems.
  • Effectively communicates matters of significance and business impact to the Lead Staff Accountant and CFO immediately when identified; and communicates regularly, professionally, and timely with CTL personnel and volunteers about assigned accounting or operations responsibilities.
  • Apply knowledge of CTL financial policies and procedures, and related documents in the function of daily, weekly, monthly, and annual responsibilities. Review all checks/cash received, and properly code deposit in the accounting system.

  • Assist Lead Staff Accountant with reconciliation of various bank accounts with entries as assigned.
  • Complete regular monthly journal entries and monthly reconciliations on all assigned balance sheet and income statement accounts as assigned.
  • Coordinates with other departments to ensure timely and accurate reconciliations for their budgeting needs and classifications.
  • Development reconciliation: working closely with development department to properly track pledges, donations, and grant payments received.
  • Ensures all records are organized in a manner to comply with document retention policies and procedures and other governmental entities compliance requirements including but not limited to permanent agency documents, grant management files, and other general accounting files.
  • Helps establish and maintain proper accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls.
  • Complete month end and year end closing processes and completes audit schedules as assigned.
  • Support and maintain team morale, by participating in department culture of problem solving and learning.
  • Maintain awareness of trends and best practices and is proactive in continually acquiring knowledge in fields related to non-profit accounting.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Satisfactory completion of university-level Intermediate Accounting required. Bachelor’s degree in Accounting preferred. Demonstrated ability to complete entry level accounting tasks and ability to learn quickly in a fast-paced, changing environment, requiring particular attention to detail.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES

  • Exhibited proficiency with reconciliations and internal controls. Experience with sophisticated accounting software.
  • Manage multiple demanding tasks simultaneously. Prioritize and coordinate projects effectively to meet agency needs.
  • Demonstrate clear and effective oral and written communication. Demonstrate strong, creative, strategic, and analytical thinking skills.
  • Knowledge of Windows operating systems and Office products. Ability to learn and use any other software programs needed in the operations of CTL programs.
